From Library Journal
Dunne, a theology professor and author of many creative books on spirituality from a Roman Catholic perspective that "cross over" to explore other religious traditions, believes that American life lacks the contemplative dimension--in words, music, and spiritual friendship--by which "unknowing love becomes knowing as it becomes heart-free." Dunne's reflections on art, literature, and music provide a new way of expressing the passage from restlessness and longing to love. It is a contemplative journey Dunne believes that everyone can take and that provides the answer to the violence and loneliness of our times. Not just for Roman Catholics, this book offers hope to the educated person who wants guidance. Highly recommended.

From Booklist
The theologian as poet! Dunne draws together more humanists than theologians to create his analysis of contemplation. He more than fulfills his promise to explain the "three movements of contemplations": the restless movement of the heart, heart speaking to heart, and following the heart. (The heart is a metaphor for deepest being.) The book is intellectual without being arcane, religious but not saccharine. The author weaves threads of insight from an unexpected corps of writers: Tolkien, Proust, Wile, MacDonald, Eisely, and many others, who are joined by artists like Mozart, Marcel Marceau, and Georgia O'Keeffe. There are echoes of Aquinas, Newman, and Buber. Except for John of the Cross, monastic voices remain silent. The work "gathers to a greatness" and concludes with two song cycles, worded by Dunne. The bibliography lists a litany of soul searchers. As with contemplatives, this book is not parochial but is another map for those "walking the road of the union of love with God." Gary Young

The darkness will return but our light will flicker, if we don't bury it too deep.
By Jackie St. Hilaire
Is your love life going in the right direction? Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? Are you in and out of darkness looking for the light?

John Dunne as well as many throughout the book share their life's journey with us. A journey that is always beginning. A circle of life, never ending and eternal. Awakening in us the stirrings of the heart and re-kindling our heart's desire (s). Ultimately and intimately with God, our true desire.

But one cannot reach the mountain top without climbing and peak experiences are not easily maintained. We have a journey to undertake and we will stumble and fall but with faith and hope we can pick ourselves up and move beyond, even beyond ourselves.

Baby steps at first, healing is oftentimes a slow process. Purifying will take us beyond our limitations. This process is not for the faint of heart. Praying for strength, sharing your own journey with others will ease the pain, suffering and grief. But love will overcome. Endurance is the test of faith and hope which leads to love, the prize, the gold at the end of the rainbow.

This book needs to be pondered. It is not to be read in a day, a week, little steps which will lead you to acceptance, love and peace.

Love's Mind, the title of the book leads us into love's direction, leading us with union with God.

The sub-title:" An Essay on Contemplative Life leads us on our journey to union with one's soul, one's companions, the world and God. Not separated but one in peace and harmony.

What is contemplation? Total contemplation is praying without ceasing. (1 Thessalonians 5:17) Here is an example: You wake up after a night's rest. You contemplate on the day ahead, not just using your mind but with your heart and soul. The children charge into the bed with you and want to play, do you stop praying, start playing or say: "I have too many things to do, you'll be late for school etc." You are contemplating with both your mind and your heart. This will help you make the right choice(s) for you and your loved ones.

It's a balancing act between contemplation and action. Like anything else it takes time to get it just right. If you live alone, as I do there is more time to address and balance the two. I have more control over my situation(s). But if you have a companion, a spouse, children, it is easy to lose love's direction. There is no right or wrong way. It's trial and error. What works for you, might not worth for another. (I Corinthians 7: 32-35)

Where are you wanting to go? (10)

"Do we love with a love we know or with a love we do not know?"

That is the central issue of this extended essay on Dunne's journey to learn more about love. A priest and college teacher by profession, headquartered at the University of Notre Dame, Dunne describes the mind of love in the way of words, the way of music, and the way of friendship, after contemplations of each.

Along these ways, he finds, among other things, "...the story of how unknowing love becomes knowing love when one comes to the realization that our being in love may be God loving in us, and that our blind love may be God's unconditional love in us."

Thus he discovers one of the great missing dimensions in our modern workaday world and love life: the everyday joy of contemplating love.

Basing this set of contemplations on the proddings of a dream, Dunne ends his essay with vision of the city of the heart "where contemplation takes the place of violence." Quite promising for lovers, not fighters.

Highly recommended.
