Using new evidence from Guevara’s previously unpublished campaign diaries and declassified CIA documents, Paul Dosal reassesses Guevara’s impact as a guerrilla warrior and theorist, comparing his accomplishments with those of other guerrilla leaders with whom he has been ranked, including Colonel T. E. Lawrence, Mao Tse-Tung, and General Vo Nguyen Giap.

This reassessment reveals that Guevara was often underrated as a conventional military strategist, overrated as a guerrilla commander, and misrepresented as a guerrilla theorist. Guevara achieved his greatest military victory by applying a conventional military strategy in the final stages of the Cuban Revolution, orchestrating the defensive campaign that held off the Cuban army in the summer of 1958. As a guerrilla commander, he scored impressive victories in ambush after ambush in Bolivia, but in winning the battles he lost the war. He violated most of his own precepts during the Bolivian campaign, compelling analysts to question the validity of both his strategies and his command skills.

Though he is credited with developing foco theory, Guevara never attempted to advance a new theory of guerrilla warfare. He was a fighter, not a theorist. He wanted to defeat American imperialism by launching guerrilla campaigns simultaneously in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, but his tricontinental strategy resulted in failures first in the Congo and then in Bolivia. Comandante Che presents the full record of Guevara’s successes and failures, separating myth from reality about one of the twentieth century’s most controversial revolutionary figures.

History re-written

I liked the detail. However, it would seem that the author has not sought out sufficient sources and readily and far too fully accepts the Che's accounts of the actions. Thus, the Che's machinations and betrayals of fellow rebels are ignored. Minor rebel figures such as Rene Cuervo and the Mexican are not given credit, the contributions of escopeteros and the urban fighters are not really acknowledged. Contributions of major figures such as Huber Matos are apparently minimized. The Che's withdrawal and abandonment to his death of René Ramos Latour is omitted. The effect of communist betrayal on non communist members of M-26-7 and other anti-Batista organizations are not taken into account. It would have been a far more interesting, but less flattering book if the Che's devious and ruthless plots to reach power and remove rivals were clearly pointed out.

This book is very poor. The author clearly has some mental issues,
going in circles and saying the same thing over and over and over again.
The whole book is a giant collection of repetitions. Do not buy!

Aging surprisingly well

The essays in this book are speculative, but most of the book consists of reviews of "where we have been, where we are now" with cautious extrapolations towards the future. There are a few exceptions, but I skimmed them: I'll read a good SF novel instead.
Published in 1996, as a body the essays have aged very well. There has been a great deal of progress in neuroscience in the last decade, and it continues to pace ahead. Still, this is a good book for getting up to speed and virtually every paragraph is easily understood by laymen.
I found four spelling errors in my hardcover copy.

The vistas fixed by windows and pavilions referred not to the actual relationship of the king to his domain, but rather to the memory of a once-expanding territory.

I own the hardcover version of this book. This is a fascinating topic. The writing in this book is beautiful: rich, concise, informed.

This book is serious scholarship, but much of it is accessible to the interested layperson. I highly recommend this book.

Choice of the dance as a source of life-affirming images, this book argues, was not accidental among four of today's most influential poets. A common preoccupation of T, S. Eliot, Hart Crane, Theodore Roethke, and William Carlos Williams - despite temperamental and artistic differences was to find an order beneath the surface of visible things. Humanity's quest for cosmic order always has been expressed in dancing 'before words were and when words failed.' For the first time this book shows why and how the dance became central to these poets' perception of experience. All four found models in the poetry of Whitman and Yeats, both lovers of the dance. All four were sensitive to cultural movements, three of which were concurrent with their poetic development: the revitalization of classical ballet, the explosion of modern dance, and the 'mythic renaissance' - a fresh exploration of myth and ritual by scientists and humanists alike. The ties of myth and ritual to dance have been traced in a number of seminal books. It was no coincidence, the author feels, that her chosen poets all knew and admired dancers. Eliot was a balletophile from his Paris student days. At 23 Crane wrote of lsadora Duncan's impact on him: "It was like a wave of life . Rocthke taught at Bennington with Martha Graham and called himself 'dancing-mad.' At 26 Williams wrote a verse tribute to Isadora, and at 72 he still asserted that poetry 'began with the dance.' The Universal Drum begins with an overview of the intellectual and artistic crosscurrents in the early 20th century that provided a congenial climate for the poets' experimentation with language, form, and theme. This introduction is followed by detailed analyses of dance imagery in the poems of Eliot, Crane, Roethke, and Williams. Each was willing to try to give words to gesture, to suspend the workings of the mind for the intuitive experience. Each saw himself - sometimes seriously, sometimes wittily - as a modern shaman dancing order out of chaos.

documenting how poor conditions were

Nobel laureate and Spanish patriot, Cajal also served in the colonial army in Cuba, documenting how poor conditions were. A man with a fantastic memory and a gift for pen and ink art. The episodes are unique, often narcissistic, and include a nostalgic and poetic vision towards the end of his path in science. A great autobiography.

Interesting view on science in another age

This is an interesting but somewhat strange book. It provides a really amazing view of what it was like to do science in those days, in particular about the various political maneuvering that was required to navigate the old spanish academic system. It also provides interesting insight into the personality of one of the greatest pioneers of cell biology. Unfortunately, part of his personality involves telling us all how great he was, so sometimes I found the book a little tiresome to read. I was also kind of disappointed in that it took a long time before he got around to covering the time when he actually made his important contributions to science. Still, for anyone interested in cell or neurobiology, or in the history of science, I would recommend this book fairly strongly as something they will enjoy.

An excellent sample of a young but promising research area

Cognitive psychology started to study the self-monitoring and self-control possibilities of the human mind in the 1970's. The topic configurated a promising research area in the 1990's. Metcalfe & Shimamura have selected for this book a representative sample of the field until 1994. The selection includes basic and applied research focused on memory monitoring, problem solving monitoring, metacognition development, and some classic methodological issues. A reedition would probably need to include a chapter on attributions monitoring, and a chapter on the philosophy of mind.
This book gives the best state-of-the-art until 1994. All the researchers on metacognition should read this selection carefully to avoid ill-structured studies.

A fascinating read about a fascinating industry

As a person who does research in the automotive industry I found the book to be an invaluable companion to "The machine that changed the world". The authors provide compelling analysis of the automotive supply chain and manufacturing process and its evolution in the recent years. The book is full of specific numbers, evidence and case studies which differentiate it from a number of other more anecdotal accounts of the automotive industry. This is a must read for researchers and anyone interested in knowing what is wrong with the current state of Big 3 US automotive companies.

You need to not only think outside the box but work outside the box

This is a timely reminder for those companies who consider themselves to be Lean to take another long hard look at themselves.

The authors demonstrate that within the four walls of the production plant many manufacturers have put into practice Lean principles, but they go on to demonstrate that all the company has succeeded in doing is optimise a small part of the real value chain. The Authors criticise short-sighted approaches to Lean which provide little or no benefit for the customer and loses the opportunity for companies to differentiate their business.

The next competitive advantage will be gained by those companies who are brave and confident enough to really start connecting their value chains to the customer (end-user) and their suppliers.

Often companies say things like, 'we have enough to worry about getting our own part of the business sorted out without worrying about what our suppliers or distributors are doing' this thinking illustrates the problem the authors are discussing and provide direction for companies who simply cannot think outside the box let alone work outside their box.

This is well written, researched and provides a clear direction for lean Manufacturers, lets hope it does not take another century for them to learn.

Excellent analysis of the automotive industry

Highly recommendable book for anyone interested in production management or current trends in automotive industry. Holweg and Pil describe the challenges of car manufacturers and the challenges they are facing. Although, "Built-to-last and made-to-stock" seems the way many companies are still heading, something new is required. The key points seem to be demand for build-to-order type of process and increasing product variety. Responding to this requires different types of flexibility.
This phenomenon has many parallels to other industry sectors such as fast moving consumer goods and especially electronics products. "The Second Centrury" is a continuum to "Machine that Changed the World". This is a great book for MBA or MSc courses in industrial management and it gives a critical perspective on many current practices.

McCall follows the rise of dramatic interpretation of the early Christian liturgy from its beginnings through such elements as costumes, interpretative text, and gesture. He then examines the development of performance theory, focusing on the work of Victor Turner and Richard Schechner, and asks if it can be applied to the liturgy. Three views of liturgical theology, especially that of Aiden Kavanagh's, which holds that the liturgy as enacted is liturgy properly presented, set the stage for McCall to construct a definition of liturgy as a mode of performance. In chapter 4, McCall brings Aristotle’s categories in the Poetics to bear on liturgical action. In the final chapter he analyzes an actual liturgical enactment: the celebration of the Mass at Rome in the early eighth century according to the Gregorian Sacramentary and the actions described in Ordo Romanus I.

I chose this book a number of years ago to review for a course on Eucharistic theology. While the first part was slow going for me, it picked up, and now I find myself thinking about and applying what I learned. There is no point to gestures if they don't mean something and communicate it to those with whom we are celebrating.

I'm out of the country now, and the book is back in the US. High on my list of things to do during my next visit home is to find that book and reread it in light of recent experience here.

Do This is well worth not only taking the time to read, but also worth returning to and considering in the long run.
