An interesting challenge for our minds

Beatrice Bruteau tells us about a possible new social order based on the change from the current domination paradigm to a future communion paradigm.
In the domination paradigm, individuals are more like objects identified by a number of attributes with which they tend to identify themselves and which make them different from other individuals.
In the communion paradigm, persons are made in the image of the Trinity. They are indescribable subjects, who continuously give and share their life with others and live by the life of the whole.
As far as I am concerned, I think that the most enlightening idea she puts forward in order to help us understand this fundamental change is the shift from the particle metaphor to the field metaphor.
In the domination paradigm, she compares individuals to particles that tend to live an autonomous type of life, where they fight or ignore one another, or sometimes associate, but always remain external to each other.
In the communion paradigm, she compares persons to fields, in the sense of interacting patterns of energy. This image makes it easier to understand the mutual indwelling of persons, which she claims to be the basis of the new communion paradigm.
When you add to this, the fact that she identifies this radiated energy with pure unmotivated creative love, you have a lot to meditate in order to tune your own mind to this radically new way of thinking ourselves and our world.

A brilliant book. I tend to underline my books for future reference. This book is well marked. Challenging and insightful this book stimulated my thinking, stirred my heart, and expanded my faith. I am a philosophy, English, theology type and found this book satisfying from all perspectives. Will be looking for more from this author. Warning. Not a light read!

A classic, first published in 1950, still relevant

This book came into my possession through unhappy circumstances: a person abandoned their dreams and moved away, leaving this and many other wonderful books heaped among the forgotten treasures in a house that was in foreclosure.

Being a book person "forever", I've been sifting through the wreckage and find the occasional treasure: this book, if you're willing to work with it, doesn't hand you a fish: it *teaches* you to fish. To be more direct, you are given assignments and a materials list. You are asked to mix and blend and think of the results you've achieved. You will develop technique, because you are asked to reproduce some works of art that are complex. And from this book, most astonishingly of all, you may find your own unique "voice".

This book takes neither a condescending "For Dummies" and "hand-holding approach", nor does it preach learning from the lofty, intellectual "shower in a raincoat" perspective. It is amazing that I'd never heard of 'Color Exercises for the Painter' and quite likely never would have known of its existence had this person not run in the wrong direction, abandoned their achievable dreams and gone off to tilt at windmills. You can learn quite a lot about a person by the things they choose to leave behind -- and you can learn quite a lot from this book, if you're willing to jump in and believe anything is possible (especially the belief in yourself).

Good way to learn color theory

Unlike many books for artists learning color theory, this book is a hands-on approach. There are good explanations of color theory and each exercised is a concrete color problem. It's a great book for students and teachers, or anyone who wants to expand their knowledge of painting, by PAINTING! There are 92 exercises/studio projects in all and chapters on: Color temperature, Complementaries, Color Values, Color Perspective, Composing with Color, Painting Techniques and Color, and The Feeling of Color.

He examines the variety of technological, historical, cultural, political, and personal forces that shaped the American book trade, paying particular attention to the contributions of the German bookseller Frederick Leypoldt and his journal, Publishers Weekly.

Unlike many studies of the book business, How Books Came to America is more concerned with business than it is with books. Its focus is on how books are manufactured and sold, rather than how they are written and read. It is, nevertheless, the story of the people who created and influenced the book business in the colonies and the United States. Famous names in the American book trade—Benjamin Franklin, Robert Hoe, the Harpers, Henry Holt, and Melvil Dewey—are joined by more obscure names like Joseph Glover, Conrad Beissel, and the aforementioned Frederick Leypoldt. Together, they made the American book trade the unique commercial institution it is today.

How was the female body perceived in the popular culture of late nineteenth-century Spain? Using a wide array of images from popular magazines of the day, Lou Charnon-Deutsch finds that women were typically presented in ways that were reassuring to the emerging bourgeois culture.

Charnon-Deutsch organizes the 190 images reproduced in this book into six broad categories, or "fictions of the feminine": she reads women's bodies as a romantic symbol of beauty or evil, as a privileged link with the natural order, as a font of male inspiration, as a mouthpiece of bourgeois mores, as a focalized point of male fear and desire, and as an eroticized expression of Spanish exoticism and political ambitions. These imaginary visions of femininity, Charnon-Deutsch argues, were a response to, and also helped to create, gendered stereotypes by suggesting ideal feminine behavior and poses. Further, they comprised a reassuring "between-male" cultural medium that provided graphic validation of women's docile body for a culture enthralled with femininity.

Integrating the fields of literature and cultural studies, Charnon-Deutsch's approach to this subject is unique. Many of the images collected here are available for the first time, and they represent only a fraction of the two thousand images Charnon-Deutsch collected during her research. This book will appeal to students of Spanish cultural studies and gender studies, as well as to art historians.

The excerpts fall into three groups, illustrating the strategies used by medieval writers to establish their cultural authority, the ways they constructed audiences and readerships, and the models they offered for the process of reading. Taken together, the excerpts show how vernacular texts reflected and contributed to the formation of class, gender, professional, and national identity. They open windows onto late medieval debates on women's and popular literacy, on the use of the vernacular for religious instruction or Bible translation, on the complex metaphorical associations contained within the idea of the vernacular, and on the cultural and political role of the "courtly" writing associated with Chaucer and his successors.

Besides the excerpts, the book contains five essays that propose new definitions of medieval literary theory, discuss the politics of Middle English writing, the relation of medieval book production to notions of authorship, and the status of the prologue as a genre, and compare the role of the medieval vernacular to that of postcolonial literatures. The book includes a substantial glossary that constitutes the first mapping of the language and terms of Middle English literary theory. The Idea of the Vernacular will be an invaluable asset not only to Middle English survey courses but to courses in English literary and cultural history and courses on the history of literary theory.

Medieval Vernacular Theory

An excellent source-book for anyone studying Middle English. It compiles an extensive selection of excerpts which demonstrate the ways in which medieval English writers struggled with the concept of writing in English, and defended their use of the vernacular. The accompanying essays range from excellent to mediocre, but the texts themselves make the book worth buying. By compiling texts about medieval literary theory, this book begins to fill a major gap in medieval studies.
