As Glenn Peers explains in Sacred Shock, there were, instead, a variety of devotional objects—pectoral crosses, church mosaics, icons, and illuminated manuscripts—regarded as infused with divine presence and used in religious practices. What concerns Peers in this provocative book is the means by which the relationship between the divine and the human was made manifest through crafted, material objects.

According to Peers, the devotional objects of Byzantium should be understood as having a detail or place that plays a large part in “framing” their meaning for viewers. After an insightful discussion of pectoral crosses, Peers examines a series of case studies, which includes the depiction of the blood of Christ in the Chludov Psalter, a fourteenth-century icon of St. George, and the Mandylion, a famous relic thought to preserve the traces of Christ’s face.

A Courtier’s Mirror establishes the unique importance of Thomasin von Zerclaere's Welscher Gast as a document of social practices and concerns in medieval German-speaking court society. As the first book-length study in English, A Courtier's Mirror not only provides a framework for understanding the Welscher Gast and its images, but further explores the rich manuscript reception of the poem and the careful cultivation of a distinct elite identity. Throughout its continued popularity, Starkey argues that the illustrated poem participates in the construction of elite secular identity for an audience that was concerned with distinguishing itself socially and emancipating itself from clerical society. As its audience shifts from rural ministerial family to urban burgher, so the staging of the poem also changes. Starkey selects redactions to show that while the text received only minor revisions over the years, the extensive illumination program and the poem's formatting changed significantly and with deliberate intent. She identifies the 1340 Gotha redaction as the most striking example of a redesigned and expanded image cycle intended to convey models of courtly behavior. Starkey places this manuscript, in particular, in its historical context and convincingly argues for its special place within the reception of Der Welsche Gast.   Supported by extensive appendices and a full set of color illustrations of the Gotha manuscript, as well as select illustrations from other manuscripts, A Courtier’s Mirror presents vital new research on the complexity of the interrelation of text and image. As such, it will be of interest to scholars of medieval studies, art history, manuscript illustration, and the history of the book.

In this book of meditations, Dunne takes us along with him on A Vision Quest. He finds his vision in the silence between the world of words and the world of music.

What he has heard in the silence, he has listened to and we readers are his beneficiaries. The key to reading the words Dunne writes is to read them softly aloud to yourself. Then you will experience the musicality of their flow.

Touching on many insights he has discovered along the long quest he has chronicled in his many books, he leads us with questions and his answers worked out over many years of study.

For example, with regard to Wittgenstein's attempt to answer the riddle of eternal life, Dunne summarizes the attempt in three simple questions:

Am I my world?
Am I my time?
Am I my body?

Surely we understand the serious impact and limiting consequences of saying "yes" to these questions in the present era of self-centeredness.

Using his tried and true approach of "passing over" to the perspectives of countless authors, Dunne sees the visions of others, examines them, and then returns to reformulate his own answer.

Pursuing the simple example above, with an ever-so-slight change in wording, he reveals not only his own position, but the correcting insight that allows us to come out of our self-centered ways with the help of a new "in" perspective:

I am in my world.
I am in my time.
I am in my body.

From the riddle of eternal life, Dunne walks on to address the "labyrinthical" soul, the memories of his life with God, how God as spirit illumines our minds and kindles our hearts, and how the practice of the presence works. As he does so, we have the opportunity to be out of our worlds, out of our times, and out of our bodies, as he shares so many inspired insights.

At the end Dunne provides us with a cycle of songs to be sung and even danced, so we can experience the fullness of God that his enthusiasm happily demonstrates.

About the Author
Peter Ball, a formercanon of St Paul's Cathedral, has many years experience in parishministry and spiritual direction. He is author of Adult Believing andAdult Way to Faith.
Canon Malcolm Grundy was Director of the Foundation for Church Leadership (until March 2009, when he became a Consultant with Live-Wires Associates). He has been variously Team Rector of Huntingdon, Archdeacon of Craven (Bradford), Director of Training (London) and Senior Industrial Missioner (Sheffield). He is a Consultant and trainer with Avec (Director), Edward King Institute for Ministry Development (Founder Editor of the journal Ministry), Chair of MODEM (Managerial and Organizational Disciplines for the Enhancement of Ministry) and Non Executive Director of GJ Palmer (Publishers of the Church Times).

The book begins by developing Hume’s critique of rationalism, with reference especially to the section of the Treatise that deals with the continuing existence of bodies (an argument that subverts intellectualist criteria by attempting to satisfy them) and to his neglected essay “The Sceptic” where Hume reveals the importance of our embodiment through a comic portrayal of philosophers’ efforts to “correct our sentiments.” Then it moves on to ward off charges of irrationalism by showing that, although our powers of self-correction are more limited than the rationalist thinks they are, a Humean position is able both to sustain a commitment to reflection and to sensitize us to a version of irrationalism, manifest in monotheistic theologies, that is otherwise difficult to detect. The book concludes, more speculatively, with a comparison of persons to artworks in order to show how our aesthetic dimension is the source of some of the normative work previously assigned to rationalist reason.

His criminal career culminated in a final, disastrous assault on Edward III's cousin, Lady de Wake, in 1356, which resulted in his banishment by the king.

Aberth looks at the social and economic side of De Lisle's term as bishop, an aspect of Episcopal history mostly ignored by historians. An unusually rich body of primary sources, including plea rolls, gaol delivery rolls, and ancient correspondence written in medieval Latin and Anglo-Norman French found at the Public Record Office in London, enables Aberth to create a comprehensive picture of de Lisle's activities. Aberth explores the motives for de Lisle's involvement in crime, the makeup of his criminal band, and the paradox of a bishop as criminal. By placing de Lisle's career within the context of bastard feudalism and magnate crime in fourteenth-century England, Aberth explains why de Lisle's criminal behavior was not typical of his fellow magnates: his inexperience and naïveté in manorial administration and court politics resulted in his mismanagement of funds and isolation from his colleagues in the Episcopal hierarchy. Bishop de Lisle's strange clashes with the law, which led to his eventual demise, provide an able means by which to analyze crime and justice during the reign of Edward III.

Spiritual yet visceral, learned yet passionate, Australian poet Kevin Hart's work occupies a special place in the libraries of poetry readers throughout the world. Lauded by Harold Bloom and Charles Simic, his poems have been described as likely to outlive those of most of his contemporaries. That's because Hart's is poetry as meditation. Behind his images reside senses that seem to be encountering the world anew.

Shrouded in hope, Morning Knowledge sees Hart mourning his father's death while carrying on a decades-long project of distilling matters of the spirit and heart into rich and contemplative poetry. A book in six sections, it comprises mainly single-page poems broken into rhythmic quatrains. In the hands of a lesser poet this consistency could have put the reader to sleep, but Hart uses stylistic constraint and repetitive imagery to build a symphony of emotional resonance.

Many poems have the same title and many contain the same motifs, including Dark One (an image for God that places Hart in the company of the great mystics), cats, summer, rats and darkness. For this reviewer, the cumulative effect was a deepening and refraction of the images, until they spoke a fresh kind of truth:

`Let's each be keyhole to the big wild world
And see each other's darkness in full light
Let's try to feel the face of this our house
And taste its summer evenings on our tongues.'

`Huge rats have run across our century
And burrowed deep inside some smiling truths.

Vantuono's "Pearl": The Best One-volume Edition of the Poem

As a young but informed student of medieval English literature, I consider "Pearl" the most profound and beautiful work ever composed in English. However, the audience for the poem has seldom ventured beyond the realm of specialists and lucky students like me. William Vantuono's unbelievably thorough edition of "Pearl" presents a new opportunity for the poem to reach a wider audience. Its main feature is the complete Middle English text with a facing-page verse translation (the first of its kind with "Pearl"). However, it includes every possible piece of information relevant to the poem's many complex issues (authorship; manuscript origin and dating; poetic structure and themes; linguistic and metrical features). In addition, Vantuono provides an exhaustive bibliography for those interested in the wide range of scholastic work submitted on the poem. In short, Vantuono's edition is the best compilation of materials about "Pearl" on the market. For those who are familiar with E.V. Gordon's standard scholarly edition of "Pearl," I would say that Gordon's edition is still unrivaled for its linguistic apparatus; however, Vantuono's bibliography and up-to-the-minute summary of conjecture concerning authorship of the poem make his edition a must-have for any person or student interested in the poem. As for Vantuono's verse translation, I still think that Marie Borroff's verse translation (Norton, 1977) has no equal, but Vantuono's adequately preserves the rhyme and alliterative qualities of the Middle English.
