Dynamic Patterns: The Self-Organization of Brain and Behavior (Complex Adaptive Systems), by J. A. Scott Kelso

foreword by Hermann Haken For the past twenty years Scott Kelso's research has focused on extending the physical concepts of self- organization and the mathematical tools of nonlinear dynamics to understand how human beings (and human brains) perceive, intend, learn, control, and coordinate complex behaviors. In this book Kelso proposes a new, general framework within which to connect brain, mind, and behavior.Kelso's prescription for mental life breaks dramatically with the classical computational approach that is still the operative framework for many newer psychological and neurophysiological studies. His core thesis is that the creation and evolution of patterned behavior at all levels -- from neurons to mind -- is governed by the generic processes of self-organization. Both human brain and behavior are shown to exhibit features of pattern-forming dynamical systems, including multistability, abrupt phase transitions, crises, and intermittency.Dynamic Patterns brings together different aspects of this approach to the study of human behavior, using simple experimental examples and illustrations to convey essential concepts, strategies, and methods, with a minimum of mathematics.Kelso begins with a general account of dynamic pattern formation. He then takes up behavior, focusing initially on identifying pattern-forming instabilities in human sensorimotor coordination. Moving back and forth between theory and experiment, he establishes the notion that the same pattern-forming mechanisms apply regardless of the component parts involved (parts of the body, parts of the nervous system, parts of society) and the medium through which the parts are coupled. Finally, employing the latest techniques to observe spatiotemporal patterns of brain activity, Kelso shows that the human brain is fundamentally a pattern forming dynamical system, poised on the brink of instability. Self-organization thus underlies the cooperative action of neurons that produces human behavior in all its forms.

What language would It use to describe itself? Can something like mathematics, music, language or art, which It created contain the essence to even describe itself? Do modern models describe It any better than earlier models? In the context of the times does Non-linear Dynamics attractors describe (or for that matter predict) any better than C.Jung's archetypes? As far as that goes, since they both describe scales of magnitudes, why is their so much similarity between so many of each others concepts?(enantiomorphism vs. entrainment). One would think the biological scientific community would really embrace the concepts in this book for the simple reason to get them off the hook with one of their most difficult areas. If the human brain and thus cognitive and conscious processes are a product of limit cycles and memory simply a function of a hystersis curve the entire process becomes a function of Newtonian physics in support of biology's basic premise. Self-determination and teleological arguments become academic. Mind boggling. (I think the human brain is highly overrated). While Kelso's book Dynamic Patterns doesn't answer these questions either, it is still a pretty good book (overlooking not having any equations on the first page). Already in it's third printing it doesn't need me to critique it. For computer modelers: Mathcad contains the necessary (logistics) for scalar mapping and iterated bifurcations to provide the background to create the models used in the book. (including Lorenz models, Duffings, ODE solvers). Dynamics: Numerical Explorations, (Springer) with related program even goes one better. Matlab's signal processing toolbox, (creates any signal p.48, check out the Hofstader sequence relation to Kelso's basic signal), wavelets toolbox (creates Farey sequence, most converging fraction sequences paint this same picture). Because these equations can be set up as state-space models the same model can be used Matlab's system identification, control, and neural net toolboxes (use feedforward instead of feedback). For biologicals: Most applicable non-linear equations are much better handled by differential equations. While a unit circle torus may work for pictures it is does not give unique solutions and thus calculable answers. Assuming the time constant is the same in each differential equation and then cascading the solutions into each other to build matrices that can then be used to build the phase plots easily solves this. Check out Spikes, Decisions, and Actions (Wilson) probably the best as far as Matlab add-ons go (real action figures basic formulas and models can be modified to see the effect of gain i.e., use of amphetamines or inhibitors SSRI). Although Koch's (Biophysics of Computation provides good background in stochastic processes in the Markovian sense and Tri-diagonal matrices) startneuro Simulink from Methods in Neuronal Modeling (MIT Press) is a lot more fun!(Gabrianni and Koch) In the same book is Rinzel and Ermentrout's original work on Oscillations. And last but not least the internet address for all these and the classic Neuron model by Hines is included.

Comandante Che: Guerrilla Soldier, Commander, and Strategist, 1956-1967, by Paul J. Dosal

The victory of Fidel Castro's rebel army in Cuba was due in no small part to the training, strategy and leadership provided by Ernasto Che Guevara. Despite the deluge of biographies, memoirs and documentaries that appeared in 1997 on the 30th anniversary of Guevara's death, his military career remains shrouded in mystery. This work offers an objective view of Guevara's record as a Guerilla soldier, commander and strategist from his first skirmish in Cuba to his defeat in Bolivia eleven years later. Using new evidence from Guevara's previously unpublished campaign diaries and declassified CIA documents, Paul Dosal reassesses Guevara's impact as a guerilla warrior and theorist, comparing his accomplishments with those of other guerilla leaders with whom he has been ranked, including Colonel T.E. Lawrence, Mao Tse-Tung and General Vo Nguyen Giap. This reassessment reveals that Guevara was often underated as a conventional warrior and theorist. Guevara achieved his greatest military by applying a conventional military strategy in the final stages of the Cuban Revolution, orchestrating the defensive campaign that held off the Cuban army in the summer of 1958. As a guerilla commander, he scored impressive victories in ambush after ambush in Bolivia, but in winning the battles he lost the war. He violated most of his own precepts during the Bolivian campaign, compelling analysts to question the validity of both his strategies and his command skills. Through he is credited with developing foco theory, Guevara never attempted to advance a new theory of guerilla warfare. He was a fighter, not a theorist. He wanted to defeat American inperialism by launching guerilla campaigns simultaneously in Asia, Africa and Latin American, but his tricontinental strategy resulted in failures first in the Congo and then in Bolivia. This book presents the full record of Guevara's successes and failures, separating myth from reality about one of the 20th century's most contraversial revolutionary figures.

The victory of Fidel Castro's rebel army in Cuba was due in no small part to the training, strategy, and leadership provided by Ernesto Che Guevara. Despite the deluge of biographies, memoirs, and documentaries that appeared in 1997 on the thirtieth anniversary of Guevara's death, his military career remains shrouded in mystery. Comandante Che is the first book designed specifically to provide an objective evaluation of Guevara's record as a guerrilla soldier, commander, and strategist from his first skirmish in Cuba to his defeat in Bolivia eleven years later.

Using new evidence from Guevara's previously unpublished campaign diaries and declassified CIA documents, Paul Dosal reassesses Guevara's impact as a guerrilla warrior and theorist, comparing his accomplishments with those of other guerrilla leaders with whom he has been ranked, including Colonel T. E. Lawrence, Mao Tse-Tung, and General Vo Nguyen Giap.

This reassessment reveals that Guevara was often underrated as a conventional military strategist, overrated as a guerrilla commander, and misrepresented as a guerrilla theorist. Guevara achieved his greatest military victory by applying a conventional military strategy in the final stages of the Cuban Revolution, orchestrating the defensive campaign that held off the Cuban army in the summer of 1958. As a guerrilla commander, he scored impressive victories in ambush after ambush in Bolivia, but in winning the battles he lost the war. He violated most of his own precepts during the Bolivian campaign, compelling analysts to question the validity of both his strategies and his command skills.

Though he is credited with developing foco theory, Guevara never attempted to advance a new theory of guerrilla warfare. He was a fighter, not a theorist. He wanted to defeat American imperialism by launching guerrilla campaigns simultaneously in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, but his tricontinental strategy resulted in failures first in the Congo and then in Bolivia. Comandante Che presents the full record of Guevara's successes and failures, separating myth from reality about one of the twentieth century's most controversial revolutionary figures.

An Honest Military Assessment
By andrew huse
A historical figure like Che Guevara can easily become enshrouded in myth and legend. Much of the material written on him focuses on Che the revolutionary or Che the theorist, but they miss the real point. Guevara was first and foremost a soldier and tactician, and that is the emphasis of Paul J. Dosal's level-headed assessment of Guevara as a military figure.
Dosal takes a hard, honest look at Guevara's contributions to history, eschewing image for substance. When one probes beyond Guevara's vitriolic words against capitalism and imperialism, we find a man impatient with debate and theory, and anxious for decisive action and violence. Instead of a live-saving man trained in medicine, Guevara cast himself as a dealer of death in combat.
The Cuban Revolution is examined, from the first disastrous engagement after landing to the deluge of victories over Batista's tottering regime. Dosal supplies helpful and detailed maps of specific engagements and campaigns (some as small as squad-level) to illustrate the action for his readers. I found the maps to be a welcome addition that allowed me to visualize the engagements as they happened. They also made other engagements easier to imagine, because Che's ambushes usually followed a fairly set pattern.
It is refreshing to read a book that is so solidly concerned with Guevara's actions. While Dosal dwells on the development of Guevara's revolutionary philosophy, he also illuminates his record as a commander. Guevara was a superior tactician among his comrades in the Cuban revolution, but he had no subtlety or finesse in the political arena. This shortcoming steadily hindered his efforts after the victory over Batista: first by angering the USSR and China while ostensibly seeking their support for Third World revolution, and second by alienating any Bolivian allies during his ill-fated campaign there.
Che's modest theoretical efforts are reviewed in detail as well, and Dosal makes no effort to portray these contributions as especially original. Instead he points out that Mao Tse-Tung's writings, as well as those of Lawrence of Arabia, originally covered the field of Guerilla Warfare in more detail. Dosal also highlights how the conditions of the Cuban Revolution were unique. Batista's army was well equipped with weapons, but not with the will to fight. Guevara wrongly assumed that every other undeveloped capitalist/authoritarian regime would crumble just as easily. In fact, many of Guevara's theories are based upon this mistaken belief, and explain his awful performance in Bolivia.
The focus is kept tight throughout, and Dosal's findings are not always flattering. Fidel's miscalculations, especially at the beginning of the campaign, are highlighted. Guevara's bravery and natural tactical abilities in conventional and guerilla warfare are never questioned. But his impulsive, arrogant, impatient, and fatalistic traits come to the fore after the Cuban victory. Dosal covers his ineffectual fiasco in Congo. While the results were not entirely his fault, his naïve belief that African nationalists would embrace an Argentine as their leader was the root of his failure there. Dosal reveals how Guevara persisted long after failure seemed certain, and how it almost cost him his life when he refused to leave.
Special attention is paid to the disastrous Bolivian campaign. Many historians hint that Castro had a hand in Guevara's death, but Dosal effectively argues against the notion. Che's own shortcomings as a politician and planner proved to be the root of his failure and death. His tryst with a possible double agent, lack of planning for an urban support network, and insulting behavior toward Bolivian communist leaders all contributed to Guevara's doom. Guevara also violated most of the principles he articulated in his writings. Dosal's honesty about Guevara's character flaws ultimately make Che a more human, compassionate, and tragic figure than a lionizing biography would have.
Overall, Dosal's work rounded out my already considerable knowledge of this remarkable man. It penetrated through the myths to the man and his actions. I was impressed by the detail of the book. If I could name any fault, it is that events at the end of the Cuban campaign seemed to pass too quickly, without the detailed treatment of other battles. But in Dosal's defense, events did unfold in a virtual landslide pace, and the final military collapse of Batista's regime took little more than a month. Commandante Che is a must-read for anyone interested in Che Guevara as a soldier, tactician, and human, with as many flaws as dreams.

Juan de Segovia and the Fight for Peace: Christians and Muslims in the Fifteenth Century (History Lang and Cult Spanish Portuguese), by An

Juan de Segovia (d. 1458), theologian, translator of the Qur'an, and lifelong advocate for the forging of peaceful relations between Christians and Muslims, was one of Europe's leading intellectuals. Today, however, few scholars are familiar with this important fifteenth-century figure. In this well-documented study, Anne Marie Wolf presents a clear, chronological narrative that follows the thought and career of Segovia, who taught at the University of Salamanca, represented the university at the Council of Basel (1431–1449), and spent his final years arguing vigorously that Europe should eschew war with the ascendant Ottoman Turks and instead strive to convert them peacefully to Christianity.

What could make a prominent thinker, especially one who moved in circles of power, depart so markedly from the dominant views of his day and advance arguments that he knew would subject him to criticism and even ridicule? Although some historians have suggested that the multifaith heritage of his native Spain accounts for his unconventional belief that peaceful dialogue with Muslims was possible, Wolf argues that other aspects of his life and thought were equally important. For example, his experiences at the Council of Basel, where his defense of conciliarism in the face of opposition contributed to his ability to defend an unpopular position and where his insistence on conversion through peaceful means was bolstered by discussions about the proper way to deal with the Hussites, refined his arguments that peaceful conversion was prefereable to war. Ultimately Wolf demonstrates that Segovia's thought on Islam and the proper Christian stance toward the Muslim world was consistent with his approach to other endeavors and with cultural and intellectual movements at play throughout his career.

"This comprehensive study examines an important figure in the history of the fifteenth-century Catholic Church, Juan de Segovia, who is known both as a leading conciliarist and as an advocate of a more pacific manner of dealing with and proselytizing Muslims. Anne Marie Wolf does an excellent job of tying together the different strands of Juan's life and career. The book will interest historians of Spain, of the Catholic Church, and of Christian-Muslim relations in the premodern world." —Mark Meyerson, University of Toronto

"Juan de Segovia was one of the four or five most interesting interpreters of Islam in premodern Europe. In this meticulous, beautifully written, and deeply thoughtful book, Anne Marie Wolf presents his complicated views on medieval Christendom's great rival in the rich detail that they deserve, and gracefully illuminates his insistent search for peaceful modes of Christian-Muslim interaction. Essential reading for all scholars of the long encounter between Christianity and Islam." —Thomas E. Burman, University of Tennessee

"Anne Marie Wolf's book, Juan de Segovia and the Fight for Peace, is a well-researched and lucid investigation into the thought of this important fifteenth-century theologian, especially his ideas on Muslim-Christian relations. Wolf's discussion of several of Segovia's lesser known early works and her well-informed focus on the Iberian context of his thought offer important new insights into Segovia's role as an advocate of late medieval conciliarism and as a proponent of peaceful resolution to interreligious conflict. This is a significant and timely contribution to the study of this remarkable fifteenth-century Spanish ecclesiastic." —Jesse D. Mann, Drew University and Montclair University

Review

“In her interesting and provocative book, Robin May Schott focuses our attention on two central themes emerging from the context of an examination of sexual relations in which philosophy has operated. First, she asks the reader to wonder about the philosophical significance of the historical absence of women from philosophy, and, second, to consider the social implications of a philosophy constructed on this basis. Her conclusions are to see the suppression of the erotic theme of human existence from philosophical contemplation to be an expression of a philosophical response to morality; women have been viewed not only in terms of their life-giving sexuality, but also to embody the threat of death as well.”

—Canadian Philosophical Reviews

“Schott’s book stands as a good introduction to sexism in Western thought.”

—International Studies in Philosophy

“This fascinating book is an important contribution to the expanding literature that seeks to expose the ideological, often misogynist, biases that pervade the Western philosophical tradition.”

—Alison Jagger, University of Colorado

“A provocative inquiry into the role of intellectual asceticism in Western philosophy and its effects on the status and treatment of women. Schott’s aim, in my view, is not so much to undercut or jeopardize philosophy as to invite further reflection on unexamined premises of philosophical thought.”

—Fred Dallmayr, University of Notre Dame

“A masterpiece of scholarship and critical interpretation that questions some of the most fundamental assumptions of the Kantian paradigm. Her avowedly feminist approach is bolstered by the instruments of social history and puts Kant’s philosophy in a fresh and provocative perspective. A bold original work, it will be a landmark in Kant scholarship.”

About the domination of Logos in Western culture
By MWin
This studied scholarly work puts some demands on the cerebral capacity of the reader. Robin May Schott accounts for the way in which female nature and the sensuous aspect of reality have been diabolized in historical culture and in the history of religion. It is quite interesting and gave me some new insights. Schott says that Immanuel Kant wants to achieve a knowledge that is "pure", untainted by the sensual and the bodily, something which Schott argues leads to a "fetishism of objectivity". Kant's fixation on the term "Pure" is evident from his writings. This goes back to Plato and further beyond. Plato said that pure thought is only achieved by cutting oneself off from all of the sensations of the body, which serve only to impede the soul's quest for truth among the otherworldly Forms. In this conception, the purity of truth stands in opposition to partaking in physical reality. The phenomenal world is systematically devalued in relation to the realm of pure thought.

Correspondingly, in Kant, the objects of knowledge are constituted by the pure forms of thought in conjunction with the pure forms of intuition, whereas the representation of the world is merely subjective, which implies a devaluation of physical reality and the bodily. Kant's systematic purification divests both the subject and the object of all immediate, sensuous, and qualitative features. The forms of human intuition and understanding become the incarnation of purity. It follows that the world becomes devoid of personal meaning and value. Schott says:

"[The] Kantian objectification of both subjects and objects is also a manifestation of the ascetic denial of sensuality. But Kant's exclusion of feeling and sensuality from cognition, morality, and aesthetic enjoyment does not indicate that these facets of existence are in fact irrelevant to the Kantian project. Rather, the intensity with which pure rationality is pursued suggests an interest in denying the erotic component in knowledge, morality, and art" (p.171).

But if ascetic consciousness seeks to reject the body, how can it exist in a body? Schott continues:

"[The] desire to attain an immortal truth that is not possible in temporal existence leads the Platonic philosopher to a love of death. The problem of the incarnation of pure consciousness is also evident in Kantian philosophy, in which pure forms of thought are constitutive of the phenomenal only at the price of excluding noumenal reality from knowledge. Both solutions indicate that the ascetic ideal can only be realized by denying the 'reality' of phenomenal existence" (p.172).

Schott's book leads me to the conclusion that the Platonic and Kantian paradigm is really a form of ascetical mysticism, a quest for God, rather than a search for an objective knowledge about reality. Thus, we have muddled the issue by regarding them as philosophical systems serving to attain objectivity. In the historical record, such ideas have served the purpose of liberating our conscious faculty from bodily identity. Thus, we have managed to divest ourselves of concrete thinking, a notorious phenomenon in the history of mankind. But since we have now liberated the thought and attained abstract thinking, it is time to see through the underlying agenda of these oldfangled thinkers and go beyond them, unless we are on a quest for worldly transcendence to attain the 'unio mystica'.

Schott, however, analyzes the ascetic trend in Western philosophy differently. She couples it with factors of society, especially economical relations and people's relation to commodities, i.e. the way in which we have become alienated from the products of our own work. I am sceptical of this analysis and the way in which Schott understands the transcendentalist trend in only negative terms, as a means of repression of the feminine and sensuous aspect, especially in the authors themselves. The book would have benefitted from a more benevolent view of transcendentalism, as a means of achieving emancipation of personality and consciousness (which has however acquired such exaggerated dimensions in Western thought that it has turned negative). That's why the book doesn't get the highest grade in my evaluation.

However, Schott puts her finger on an important aspect of Western thought, an illness that continues to this day. I am thinking, for example, of an author like Edward F. Edinger (1922-1998) who elevates "consciousness and ego formation" as the highest enterprise in human life: "Thus, the individual's striving for consciousness becomes the modern formulation of the venerable idea of labouring in the vineyard of the Lord, and the new answer to the age-old question of the meaning of life" ("The Creation of Consciousness", p.58). The ego must strive to achieve immortality among the otherworldly Forms, untainted by physical reality. It carries very strong overtones of transcendental philosophy and religion. It isn't really psychology, which must remain rooted in Mother Earth. It is remarkable, how firmly rooted this standpoint remains in Western thinking, of elevating "pure consciousness" to the detriment of sensuous reality. Schott's book is an important contribution to the understanding of our collective psychology. In my experience, the average intellectual is still rather Kantian in his/her outlook, despite the fact that the scientific trend is toward a realist perspective and a more bodily-oriented outlook, to the detriment of the idealist perspective of a mind alienated from reality.

"McInerny . . . does a good job of relating the key concepts in Aquinas's natural and supernatural theologies. This is a reliable introduction for people who are not already experts in Thomistic studies--and it has many insights for those few who are." —Vernon J. Bourke

St. Thomas Aquinas enables the reader to appreciate both Thomas's continuity with earlier thought and his creative independence. After a useful account of the life and work of St. Thomas, McInerny shows how the thoughts of Aristotle, Boethius, and Augustine and Pseudo-Dionysius were assimilated into the personal wisdom of St. Thomas. He also offers a helpful study of the distinctive features of Aquinas's Christian theology.

Solid work
By John Tuturice
Ralph McInerny's St. Thomas Aquinas as it was required reading for a philosophy class. My overall impression of the work was that it is a solid piece. It's emphasis tends toward introducing the reader to St. Thomas's philosophical viewpoint, though there is some biographical info as well. That, of course, is an important point. Readers looking for a devotional, or rather hagiographical, account of St. Thomas's life will be disapointed to some degree. Those looking to enter into the philosophical, and to some degree theological, world of St. Thomas, however, will be given a fair introduction.

That "fair introduction" should be understood to include some of the dense writing of St. Thomas, followed by dense commentary by Ralph McInerny. This means that the book is not always a smooth read. So, the casual reader may get discouraged during certain parts of the book. To that I would say, don't give up. Part of the difficulty to the modern reader is that, while we tend to be well educated, we are devoid of any real foundation in Aristotelian logic. Hence, our minds, as such, are not pre-disposed to systematic logic and intellectual proofs. But, for those who are looking to deepen their minds in this arena, this isn't a bad place to start.

Lastly, I think it important to note that although I am not new to Aquinas, I am a beginning philosophy student and many of the deeper philosophical concepts of Aquinas are new to me. So, take that into consideration when reading my review.
