FRANK M. ROBINSON, JR., C.A.G.S. in Rehabilitation Administration, is Associate Professor in the Department of Health, Sport, and Leisure Studies at Boston-Bouve College of Human Development Professions at Northeastern University. He has written a number of magazine and journal articles, and books on education, recreation, and camping as they pertain to people with disabilities.

DOE WEST is currently completing her doctoral dissertation within the Law, Policy, and Society department at Northeastern University. She is a nationally noted human rights activist within the disability rights movement for the past 21 years and has served as a resource to city, state, and federal programs that define disability.

DWIGHT WOODWORTH, JR., is a certified leisure professional. He received his M.A. in rehabilitation counseling from Assumption College in Worcester, MA and has worked with the Worcester Parks and Recreation Department. He has many years experience in working with people coping with a disability.

About the Author

The author is Chairman and Creative Director of Ingenuity, a highly successful new business consultancy based in the West End. He works closely with many of London's top agencies to help them develop and sharpen their own pitch – from pitching 'cold' to new prospects, through to the final closing pitch.

With a background in advertising, video, digital, design and PR agencies, he has worked at a senior level in the business development functions of a wide range of agencies. As an entrepreneur he has co-founded three successful agencies. Effective advice

According to Daniel Pink’s latest bestseller To Sell is Human we are all in sales now. Shaun Varga would probably agree and this book will help you excel in one specific sales process, the pitch. Varga - after a long career in advertising, PR and marketing - manages a consultancy, advising advertising agencies and other clients how to pitch for business. Reading from the cover, the purpose of the book is to help the reader to gain the confidence to deliver a brilliant pitch, to teach him to focus on the needs of the audience and hence to ensure that the pitch is an effective one. Brilliant Pitch is quite simply a tutorial on pitching.

I would also argue that it is an effective one. The main insights of Varga could as I see it pretty much be summed up by two quotes from Sun Tzu’s The Art of War: “Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win” and “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. […] If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

In Varga’s hard earned experience the buyer almost always knows what he wants to buy prior to the pitch competition takes place. This means most pitch competitors walk in to deliver a pitch that is doomed from the start. Interest and desire for your specific alternative must therefore arise before the competition officially starts. The task is to early on become the preferred alternative and this means that pitching is a much more integrative and proactive process than normally envisioned. Those who win will be the ones that have figured out which buttons they should press and to know this the winner will have to know the buyer better than the competition does.

The reader will learn to be passionate and knowledgeable of the subject at hand, to formulate an elevator pitch to gain clarity of what’s really essential in the message he wants to convey, to make the customer the hero of the pitch – not himself, to customize proposals to show that he noticed, to research the customers and the competition, to present in a format most likely to succeed, to use stories that help the customer remember what was said, how to conduct and present oneself to make a great first impression that is psychologically hard to change later on plus lots of other useful material. Much of the advice that is given is as sound as it is obvious when you read it. The fact that it still often isn’t adhered to comes down to stress and lack of time to reflect, habitual behavior and psychological biases such as over-optimism with regards to ones own ability.

To continue with references to ancient advisory authorities I at times find a slight Machiavellian streak in the author’s reasoning. Despite in chapter 10 explicitly saying that it’s better to sell the customer what they need than what they want irrespective of if you loose the pitch, there are many examples in the book of advice where the end of winning the pitch justifies the means. In chapter 5 and 8 the advice is that if you are in a competitive disadvantage you should try to hijack the process and change the agenda to you advantage under the premise that “what you want is not what you need”, in chapter 6 the reader is advised to research and quickly learn about the buyer’s hobbies to be able to point to a common interest and in chapter 10 the author at least doesn’t advice against going out on the street, asking leading questions of random passers by, edit it like crazy and present the results as the verdict of Joe Public. “It’s pretty convincing.” It’s up to everyone to make up their mind if this kind of advice is good or bad for business in the long run and I don’t want to pretend to be overly idealistic myself, but at times the advice is a bit too manipulative for my taste. I also think it could backfire or to talk with Machiavelli “it is double pleasure to deceive the deceiver”.

This is a very practical book and I will surely use much of the advice the author gives. I just hope I will not use all of it.

About the Author
Eugene Wettstone, recognized as one of the leading gymnastics coaches in the U.S., was Penn State's coach from 1938 to 1976. He spearheaded the growth of gymnastics in the U.S. and has been instrumental in bringing international competition to this country. He was the U.S. Olympic team coach in 1948 and 1956. Among his many honors are the Swedish Ling (Gold) Award, The Blue Cross of Finland, and Helms Hall of Fame Coach of the Year. He has held many national offices.

One of Jacques-Louis David’s most ambitious and darkly enigmatic paintings, Leonidas at the Pass of Thermopylae, hangs today in the Louvre, largely ignored. Focusing on this painting, Chains embarks on a discourse about the perception of the body, sexuality, and subjectivity in early nineteenth-century European art.

In addition to David, Chains explores the sculptural oeuvre of David’s contemporary and rival, Italian sculptor Antonio Canova. Padiyar argues that, like David’s postrevolutionary work, Canova’s innovative sculptures embodied a new, distinctively modern type of subjectivity. The book aims to take a fresh view of the status of the male body in the work of these two late neoclassical artists by linking them in novel, sometimes unexpected ways with key figures of the late Enlightenment. In postrevolutionary Europe, philosophical and literary figures such as Immanuel Kant and the Marquis de Sade pushed the language of neoclassicism to its limits. Chains argues that such innovations produced a new, distinctively sexed, politicized, and aestheticized heroic male body that emerged as an incidental aftereffect of the French Revolution.

A Fascinating, Fresh Look at the Art of Neoclassicism

Satish Padiyar stirs up controversy in the best manner of the word. Many people view the period of neoclassicism as a reaction to the Revolutinary Spirit that began in France and quickly spread through the world. In this book CHAINS: DAVID, CANOVA, AND THE FALL OF THE PUBLIC HERO IN POSTREVOLUTIONARY FRANCE he divides his investigation into the following chapter titles: Heroism After the French Revolution: David's Leonidas at Thermopylae; Inheriting Greek Eros: Anacreontism and Homosexual Desire; Kant and the Postrevolutionary Subject: The Aesthetics of Freedom; Subject and Surface: Canova and the Reinvention of Classical Sculpture; and Sade/David, in Chains.

Opening with an examination of Jacques-Louis David's 1814 painting begun when David was imprisoned after the overthrow of Robespierre but not finished until 1814 - Leonidas at the Pass of Thermopylae - Padiyar explores the conflict between painter David and sculptor Canova in the manner in which they portrayed Man after in the impact of the Revolution and enters the terrain of male figure worship almost to the point of fetishism. It reads as though the courage of common man to overthrow monarchies elevated them to the mythic hero stance of the massively muscular and sensuous Greek and Roman heroes of the past. The author manages to step aside from his artist characters to also examine the writing of such diverse men as the Marquis de Sade and philosopher Immanuel Kant. It is another way of defining and describing the Enlightenment. The 'chains' are broken!

The book is amply illustrated with both full color and black and white illustrations that serve the text well. The author writes with the facility of a novelist despite the thesis-like concept he is describing. Grady Harp, March 11

American Episcopalians have long prided themselves on their love of consensus and their position as the church of American elites. They have, in the process, often forgotten that during the nineteenth century their church was racked by a divisive struggle that threatened to tear apart the very fabric of the Episcopal Church. On one side of this struggle was a powerful and aggressive Evangelical party who hoped to make the Episcopal Church into the democratic head of "the sisterhood of Evangelical Churches" in America; on the other side was the Oxford Movement, equally powerful and aggressive but committed to a range of Romantic principles which celebrated disillusion and disgust with evangelicalism and democracy alike. The resulting conflict—over theology, liturgy, and, above all, culture—led to the schism of 1873, in which many Evangelicals left the church to form the Reformed Episcopal Church. For the Union of Evangelical Christendom tells this largely forgotten story using the case of the Reformed Episcopalians to open up the ironic anatomy of American religion at the turn of the century.

Today, as the Episcopal Church once again finds itself enmeshed in cultural and religious crisis, the remembrance of a similar crisis a century ago brings an eerily prophetic ring to this remarkable work of cultural and religious history.

"Guelzo the Prophet"

I could not disagree more with the previous reviewer. Guelzo's work, 'For the Union of Evangelical Christendom: The Irony of the Reformed Episcopalians,' is a staggering and truthful history of the REC. Not only is his analysis of the history of the REC correct, his prediction for her future is quite accurate as well. The epilogue is a must read for any interested with the identity crisis of the REC. The denomination has succumbed to Christian Reconstructionism (i.e., though no longer using this title), and as the saying goes, "men who want to be very big fish in a very small pond."
I believe one of the most profound statements comes from the epilogue where Guelzo argues, "In the Sociology of sectarianism, insularity tempts churches like the Reformed Episcopal Church to reward antiintellectualism and eccentricity and punish genuine breadth of theological opinion. The result is that 'Anglicanism' (or any other 'ism') can easily become defined in the shallow terms of controversy (vestments, terms of address, and the like) rather than in serious self-examination and self criticism." He goes on to argue that the REC is ripe to attract men "who hope to maximize their desires for status through the desperation of a small church to recruit members."
As one who studied at an REC Seminary, I can attest to the accuracy of this work. There are many wonderful people in the denomination who would be forced to admit Guelzo's accuracy in this book. I reccomend this work for its scholarly approach and honest appraisel of the history of the REC. My hope is that Allen Guelzo's prophetic work will one day prove to be untrue. Until such a time, this work will be helpful to many.

History with a Purpose

When I see the subjects of non-fiction books these days, I often wonder if writers are running out of broad-based ideas to write about. The Reformed Episcopal Church, 126 years old in 1999, is hardly a blip on the American ecclesiastical landscape, yet no history of the denomination had been written since 1902 until this work appeared five years ago. Evidently there was no popular groundswell of demand for a new history. Guelzo's book only traces the story of the Reformed Episco- palians from the nineteenth century up until 1930. Why, then, should this book have been written at all? At the time of the book's publication in 1994 it was reviewed by John Anderson in Christianity Today in the same article with Charles Dennison's new history of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. Such a comparison was appropriate because of the uncanny similarities in the situations surrounding the foundings of both of these denominations. For example, the founders of both Churches died within a few years of their respective inaugurations. In fact, the organizational meeting of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church was held in a Reformed Episco- pal church building. In his review, Anderson noted the contrast between Dennison's hagiographic history of the Orthodox Presbyterians and Guelzo's history of the Reformed Episcopal Church which is iconoclastic, critical, and fault-finding. If Anderson had known that Guelzo, who at the time he was working on his book was Professor of Church History at Reformed Episcopal Seminary, represented a clique within the Reformed Episcopal Church which had a vested interest in debunking and rewriting the early history of the denomination, he would have understood. Guelzo is an engaging writer as well as a lecturer, and his recounting of details of inter- est only to trivia buffs will hold any reader's attention. His facts are often faulty, however, and he would have done well to submit his manu- script to someone familiar with Reformed Episcopal history prior to its publication. For example, he refers to Arno Gaebelein as one of the champions of dispensationalism within the Reformed Episcopal Church, when in reality the person in question was Arno's son Frank. His views of the thoughts and trends of the early Reformed Episcopalians are flawed as well. Guelzo was the spokesman for the movement which for the last ten or fifteen years has dislodged the Reformed Epis- copal Church from its traditional moorings, but he was unceremoniously dumped when philosophical dif- ferences arose. Fortunately he is a prolific and prolix writer, so this book will not stand as his monument.

Subjective History

Dr. Guelzo has compiled a long needed history of the Reformed Episcopal Church and he has done so in a fair writing style although a somewhat dry prose. The subject matter of what amounts to a denominational history does not lend itself to an exciting read, AND the heavy doses of personal opinion and seemingly subjective delving into the reasoning and motives of long dead figures does not enhance the reading experience. The epilogue reads like a selection from Jeanne Dixon or Joyce Jillson as the author gives us his predictive look into what he believes is the future history of the Church. A future history heavily flavored by what appears to be the author's disapproval of the past history related in this volume. Owing to the fact that it is the ONLY volume on REC history available I would recommend it to the student of this period and movement in Church history.
