As early as the mid-sixteenth century, they were trading with French fishers, and by the mid-seventeenth century, large numbers of Mi’kmaq had converted to Catholicism. Mi’kmaw Catholicism is perhaps best exemplified by the community’s regard for the figure of Saint Anne, the grandmother of Jesus. Every year for a week, coinciding with the saint’s feast day of July 26, Mi’kmaw peoples from communities throughout Quebec and eastern Canada gather on the small island of Potlotek, off the coast of Nova Scotia. It is, however, far from a conventional Catholic celebration. In fact, it expresses a complex relationship between the Mi’kmaq, Saint Anne, a series of eighteenth-century treaties, and a cultural hero named Kluskap.

Finding Kluskap brings together years of historical research and learning among Mi’kmaw peoples on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. The author’s long-term relationship with Mi’kmaw friends and colleagues provides a unique vantage point for scholarship, one shaped not only by personal relationships but also by the cultural, intellectual, and historical situations that inform postcolonial peoples. Making dada out of almost nada...

The poop: The premise behind this collection of academic essays is that women have been marginalized to the fringes of Dada history. While it's quite possible that women have been undervalued throughout art history, it is also true that there is sometimes good reason for this and it has nothing to do with patriarchal politics or prejudice. Such is the case with Dada--at least that's my conclusion after reading *Women in Dada.* Although the authors generally make the case that women made some interesting contributions to Dada, they are, at best, minor contributions, and, for the most part, do belong among the footnotes of a history of the movement.

Indeed, some of the artists and writers discussed had, by the authors' own admission, only the briefest and most tangential involvement with Dada, which of itself explains why they've been marginalized in the conventional telling of Dada history.

The scoop: *Women in Dada* is a book worth reading if you're seriously interested in either Dada or woman/gender studies, but probably not for the casual reader of either. This collection bears all the trademarks of post-graduate school critical writing: interpretations teased and sometimes tortured beyond all reasonable assumptions into the semblance of something new for the purpose of saying something new, furthering an agenda, advancing a personal philosophy, etc., in other words, Derridean-style deconstruction without apology. The constant re-interpretation of old material is what academic writing has always been about--part of the vicious publish-or-perish cycle--and, ostensibly, what keeps art and literature by those long dead relevant to our time.

These subsequent re-interpretations can be interesting, illuminating (or annoying) and serve to prove that art and literature can be thought of as a kind of eternal Rorschach that tells us more about ourselves in our reaction to a work than it does the original artist or his/her original intent--a jumping-off place for original creation based on contemporary reactions.

For me, this book was most rewarding by my reading it as a sort of negative of the negative of the untold history of Dada that the authors were trying to provide--a restoring of the original Dada picture by means of where the shadow history borders on that of the major figures of Dada, who are all well-represented here.

If that makes sense. If not, try this: you get a lot of info about Duchamp, Picabia, Schwitters, Arp, Ball, etc, even if they aren't the main focus of these essays.

Also--this book is nicely formatted, well-made, and generously illustrated throughout, altho the plates are in money-saving black-and-white.

So, let me close in Dada-fashion by saying, and not irrelevantly, I trust: Unconventional on criticize broken decides life.....reenacted!

Must Have for M&As Practitioners

Outstanding text on M&As, very comprehensive. it touches upon all aspsects of the deals from strategy/synergies, types of mergers to valuation, antitrust legislation and HR issues. I really like the focus on European deals in addition to the US one. The section on defence strategies is by itself worth the price of the book.

The information is up to date and it is a book where also the notes at the end of the chapters add value. It is definetely aimed at people with business experience or/and MBA students.
Such a shame it is not available in Kindle version. One of the best books on M&As on the market (and I have read a lot of them!).

The only minor issue is that there is not a list of the cases presented in the book and if you read something of interest with regards to a case you have to search in the entire book as there is no index.

Fun, useful and smart!

I found this book easy to read, fun, and packed with all sorts of useful tips and strategies to make your public speaking shine. What I love about this book is that it's not about 'faking it' as a speaker - the author encourages you to be yourself on stage and to let your passion for your subject show. Definitely my preferred approach to speaking.

A quick summary of each part:

Awareness - The first part starts with what you might consider the basics - how body language and vocal delivery affect your speaking. The angle here is that by becoming more aware of what your body and voice do whilst you're speaking, you can choose to act in a more powerful way.

Empathy - looking at how you build rapport with your audience and understand their needs. I particularly liked the bit about different audience types you might come across and how to handle them (I've definitely seen a sniper or two!)

Freshness - how to add interest to what you say to make it more memorable. This is a useful checklist of all of the ways you might use visual aids, the words you say and interactive techniques to wow your audience.

Balance - how to create a decent structure in your speaking that people can make sense of - and that has some power behind it.

Fearlessness- this is my favourite part - it looks at how we become nervous about public speaking and what to do to overcome the fear. It's packed with some really useful tools which I'll definitely try out on my next bit of speaking.

Authenticity - another favourite bit of mine, this section shows you how you don't have to pretend to be someone else to be a great public speaker.

All in all, a really handy read. The illustrations make it a very friendly and approachable book - it's a good one to dip in and out of when you need a refresher.

About the Author

Henry W. Shoemaker (1880–1958) was the author of more than twenty volumes of popular Pennsylvania literary folklore and numerous narrative volumes about Pennsylvania’s disappearing wildlife during the first half of the twentieth century. He also served as Pennsylvania’s first State Folklorist from 1948 to 1956.

not exactly what i expected. More stories/legends of ill-fated romances, etc and less of the hunting/fishing/exploring stories i like more. All in all though, an interesting book worth buying but only if you love Penna. history.

Haag's Reader and Grammar

Haag's Reader is a worthwhile book and copies are more readily available, but J William Frey's Simple Grammar of Pennsylvania Dutch is probably a better choice for the absolute beginner. Frey's presentation of grammar rules is easier to understand and he explains the pronunciation of the dialect much better and more accurately.

However, Haag provides a larger vocabulary and better reading selections. The basic question is: Why do want to learn Pennsylvania German? If you want to speak the language, Frey is the better choice. If you want to read the literature, then Haag's reader is a better choice.

useful introduction to PA Dutch language

This book attempts to bring the reader, in one short volume, to a point where he or she can read the south German dialect known as "Pennsylvania Dutch". Of the two that I know - from Frey (separately reviewed on Amazon) and Haag - this is the less polished but more accessible to those without a background in High German. Readers who are serious about learning the language should try to find and work through both books and then tackle Haag's wonderful Pennsylvania German Anthology.

O'Toole convincingly demonstrates that, as a bishop, O'Connell actively built his own public image while ambitiously campaigning for the position of archbishop of Boston. The most enduring success, O'Toole argues, of O'Connell's 37-year tenure as archbishop of Boston - despite a sexual and financial scandal surrounding his nephew, the archdiocesan chancellor - was his elaboration of "a personal style of leadership that was different from that of earlier bishops, changing the expectations for catholic bishops in America by thrusting on them the role of public figures they have generally sought to play since". Throughout, the book examines O'Connell's cultural and symbolic leadership of New England's Catholic population, and describes O'Connell's role in defining American catholicism as both "militant and triumphant": asserting its cultural vision beyond narrow denominational boundaries into broad areas of public morality, and confident of its eventual triumph over secular standards.

Power and Its Limits at the Apex of the American Roman Catholic Church, Depicted in a Biography of a Gay, Corrupt Prelate

"Militant and Triumphant: William Henry O`Connell and the Catholic Church in Boston, 1859-1944" (University of Notre-Dame Press, 1992), by James O`Toole (a professor at my undergraduate alma mater, the University of Massachusetts at Boston) is a no-holds-barred biography of this figure. William O`Connell happens to be the prelate loosely depicted in the novel, and in the film based thereon, both titled "The Cardinal", although the novel and the film, unlike O`Toole`s scholarly biograhy, only hint at the depravity that lurked below the surface, away from public view, of Cardinal Abp. William Henry O`Connell`s life. O`Toole`s own book reveals O`Connell`s many faults, but it does not pillory him.

This biography renders a fair account of O`Connell`s life and career and of the religious milieu of O`Connell`s time, when Roman Catholic faith and worship flourished, as yet unsabotaged by the grinding vulgarity, liturgical downgrade, superficiality, the outright unbelief that have set in so widely after 1965, and lastly and perhaps worst of all (reflecting so much of the rest of these problems), the dreadful "Novus Ordo" liturgies which came into use at the dawn of the 1970s, as well as all too much of the other sheer rot and decline that so have come to bedevil and to mar the Catholic Church after the Second Vatican Council. Let`s face it, regarding O`Connell himself, without O`Toole exaggerating anything, one comes to understand the personal shallowness and failings of this priestly-turned-prelatical careerist and opportunist quite well enough simply by reading what O`Toole reveals about O`Connell, such as concerning:

-- pilfering of church funds,

-- self-indulgence, love of luxury, and frequent absenteeism to travel abroad (the lastmost expensive hobby giving rise to his nickname of "Gangplank Bill!),

-- nepotism,

-- tolerance of secret clergy marriages (including that of his own nephew, Mgr. James O`Connell),

-- arrogance and bombast (which recall, among vintage comix characters of yesteryear, the risible "Major Hoople" a lot more than the likes of the heroically powerful and wealthy yet virtuous "Daddy Warbucks" of "Little Orphen Annie"),

-- secretiveness and hypocrisy; an example of this is O`Connell`s own "closeted" homosexuality (though O`Toole approaches this more gingerly, expressing more reservations about it than have some others, whose accusations point to O`Connell as the source of the systematic practice and clerical tolerance of the beastly pederasty and ephebophilia of the Boston Archdiocese`s priests that have resulted in the outbreak of terrible scandals during the episcopates of his successors over the decades subsequent to O`Connell`s death),

-- selfishness,

-- bullying,

-- real cowardice (despite all of his bluster, posing, and tormenting of the vulnerable), making him likely to back off cravenly from many strong confrontations (despite his public relations image of steadfastness and courage),

-- general worldliness and indifference to spiritual matters such as liturgy, praying the Breviary, and other matters of truly religious importance beyond the Church`s most materialistically and blatantly institutional concerns.

The book is exceedingly well researched, with copious use of primary manuscript sources as well as of all kinds of printed literature in book and serial form, as anyone who follows up the many back-references will discover for himself.

Only a fuller treatment of O`Connell`s worthy efforts at music is lacking, which O`Toole mentions here and there but without covering so well as O`Connell`s musical contribution merits (to account for perhaps with the assistance of an academic or other practising music professional). The man who became Cardinal of Boston, if he had followed another career path, could have become an accomplished professional pianist and composer, perhaps a singer, too. I once had the opportunity, early in my music library career, to catalogue a bit of Cardinal O`Connell`s fine Latin Church music in manuscript (though he is best remembered for his pious and once popular vernacular hymns), which partly is how I became interested in this ecclesiastical figure. Cardinal O`Connell became rather well known for his pre-Vatican II hymns, which were genuinely popular as productions of musical piety for those times.

The book makes for a good read and a first-rate contribution to the study of Roman Catholicism`s history and sociology, not only in the Archdiocese of Boston, but in North America more generally.

History Generates Organisational Problems: O'Connell

Good book, interesting for Catholics to read. O'Connell's naked ambition was apparent to local priests and bishops as he slithered to the top job he sought.
If what this book claims is correct, O'Connell was not fit to be a catholic priest!

I love the tongue in cheek "the closer you get to the centre of the apple, the more likely you are to meet the worm." Worms do well in Church insecurity which has been dragged bleeding into the modern age.

Pius IX excommunicated those left and and centre when he lost the Papal States, a loss which was in fact a liberation for Italy for the Church. (read: Prisoner of the Vatican.

It is in the context of this fear and suspicion that people like O'Connell can wriggle their way to the top. Still to this day, Bishops are appointed by a Rome (rather than by the local church) fearful of modernity, a Roman Bureaucracy which tries to undo Lumen Gentium guidance of Vatican II. It is in the environment of suspicion, where priests must appear to toe the line as O'Connell did, that the pedophiles have masquerading as priests while the decent toiler was sidelined. There is a good book on Cardinal Moran in Sydney. I would love some good heavy historical work to done on Cardinal Spellman!

Incredibly provocative

This was the first book of Prof. Hauerwas's that I read, and it remains my favorite. It's been over a year since I read it, so many of the details of it are fuzzy in my mind. Nonetheless, I do remember being particularly struck by his statements about marriage, abortion, and the role of the church. Not to mention a lengthy first chapter almost entirely devoted to looking at how "scripture" functions in Richard Adams' _Watership Down_. If you've not read Hauerwas yet, repent, and buy this one. If you've read his other books, still buy this one.

An analytical review

This is an analytical book review of Stanley Hauerwas' A Community of Character: Toward a Constructive Christian Social Ethic.

Stanley Hauerwas is the Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Theological Ethics at Duke Divinity School and he holds a joint appointment with Duke Law School. Hauerwas' Methodist roots and diverse education and work experience contributes to an ecumenical theological stance that is not liberal (12). In addition to his ecumenicism, he is cross-disciplinary, as "he is in conversation with systematic theology, philosophical theology and ethics, political theory, as well as the philosophy of social science and medical ethics."

The thesis of this book is that Christian morality and ethics can only make sense and be applied to one's life when one is living within the continuing narrative of the Christian story. As a result, Hauerwas frames everything he writes about in this book around the concept of narrative because without narratives, there is a loss of community (18).

This book is essentially divided up into three parts. The first part addresses how every community needs to be rooted in a narrative. For Christians, Jesus and the Kingdom of God is the narrative that forms the church (50). Furthermore, it is the Christian's belief in the authority of Scripture and God that enables the church to be the contrast model/community to a society that does not value authority.

The second part of the book continues to emphasize the importance of narrative in understanding the church since Christians are a "storied people" worshipping a "storied God" (91). Hauerwas claims that Christians need to cultivate hope and patience in their life in order to be a contrast narrative to this world (128). For the Christian to grow in character, it is crucial that he/she learn to participate in the story of the people of God, rather than just hear about it (152).

Consequently, the first two parts set up the theoretical basis for the third part, where he applies the concepts addressed in the first two parts to discuss what kind of ethic the church should have toward the family, sex, and abortion. His discussion is framed around the fact that one cannot separate one's views on the family, sex, and abortion from the greater narrative of the church.
I love the way Hauerwas decides to address the family, sex, and abortion in the last section, since these are the pressing ethical issues that the church needs to be firm on, in order to be a contrast society.

It is fascinating to follow his discussion on the legitimacy of both singleness and marriage as a way of life to honor God. After all, within the church and in many cultures, it almost seems as though something is wrong with an individual if they do not get married. However, Hauerwas emphasizes how singleness and marriage go hand in hand in God's Kingdom. Singleness symbolizes the church's trust that God is the one who is ultimately responsible to build his church, while marriage and procreation symbolizes the church's understanding that building the church will not happen overnight (191). Furthermore, Hauerwas' insistence that narrative be the way to answer the premarital and extramarital sex questions is absolutely genius. Is it a pure or licentious lifestyle that will best prepare the Christian to live out and serve in the narrative of the church? (194). Reframing the sex questions in that light will help me as I counsel singles and marrieds in the area of sexuality. Furthermore, since I oversee the groups ministry in my church, my newfound understanding of the complementary nature of both singleness and marriage in the Kingdom of God will profoundly affect the way I counsel and lead both singles and marrieds.

Although I agree with Hauerwas' approach on the family and sex, I disagree with his view on abortion. I believe that abortion is never "morally permissible" (197), even in the direst circumstances, like conception resulting from rape. God is sovereign, even over the most tragic circumstances, and I believe that nothing is out of God's ability to restore and redeem. Although Hauerwas makes that statement, the rest of his discussion on abortion is actually enlightening. I love the way he suggests that the woman carrying a child resulting from rape should view the child as another human being in distress, rather than as a parent to a child (205). He also suggests that one should concentrate on providing a reason why one "should hope it is a child," instead of trying to figure out if "the fetus is or is not a `person'" (229). When one reframes these situations, I believe that more of a rational decision can be made in regards to the life of the child. Knowing that I will face situations where individuals will be contemplating abortion, I will definitely be making use of Hauerwas' suggestions to reframe these situations.

So all in all, I give this book a four out five.
