Many contemporary armed conflicts are fueled by young people, who, after peace accords are signed, remain both potential threats to peace and significant peace building resources. Troublemakers or Peacemakers? explores the contributions of youth and their multidimensional roles as political activists, soldiers, criminals, economic actors, peace activists, and community-builders. This volume breaks new ground in the importance it assigns to the political agency of children and youth in war zones. Contributors support their arguments and conclusions with original research based on intensive fieldwork in places such as Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Guatemala, Colombia, Angola, Northern Ireland, Bosnia, and Israel-Palestine. The leading scholars who have contributed to this volume contend that the puzzle of why peace accords succeed and fail can be better understood with the use of a multidimensional youth lens. Troublemakers or Peacemakers? is a vital resource for anyone interested in conflict resolution and the peace building process.

The Origins of Nonviolence: Tolstoy and Gandhi in Their Historical Settings, by Martin Green

This book describes the world-historical forces, acting on the periphery of the modern world - in Russia in the 19th century and India in the 20th century which developed the idea of nonviolence in Tolstoy and then in Gandhi. It was from Tolstoy that Gandhi first learned of this idea, but those world-historical forces acted upon and through both men. Tolstoy and Gandhi were at first agents of modern reform, in Russia and India. But then they became rebels against it and led a profound resistance - a resistance spiritually rooted in the traditionalism of a myriad peasant villages.

Review
Green locates the parallel and juxtaposed careers of Tolstoy and Gandhi within the context of a modern world dominated by Anglo-Saxon imperialism. Green's book is not simply comparative dual biography, but a study of how the lives of two outsiders one Russian, the other Indian - were determined by the world of modern imperialism centering in 19th-century England. Their theories of nonviolence are highly pertinent for the contemporary world now living out the consequences of aggressive Western materialism. A well-written, thoughtful, balanced, and contextualized study. --Choice

Knowing the Love of Christ: An Introduction to the Theology of St. Thomas Aquinas, by Michael Dauphinais, Matthew Levering

Knowing the Love of Christprovides a thorough introduction to the theology of St. Thomas Aquinas in accessible language. As a complement to the many short introductions to St. Thomas’s philosophy, this book fills a gap in the literature on Thomas—a comprehensive introduction to his thought written by theologians. With enthusiasm and insight, Michael Dauphinais and Matthew Levering make available the vast theology of Thomas Aquinas.

Focusing upon the Summa Theologiae, Dauphinais and Levering illumine the profoundly biblical foundations of Thomas’s powerful vision of reality. Drawing upon their own experience, the authors guide readers into grappling with the fresh and penetrating insights of St. Thomas. Students at all stages of theological education will find this book an enriching introduction to the mysteries of the Christian faith. “Dauphinais and Levering capture the teaching of Thomas with thoroughness, lucidity, and completeness. I find this book an extraordinary accomplishment.” —Romanus Cessario, O.P., St. John’s Seminary, Brighton, Massachusetts “The beginner often finds St. Thomas Aquinas daunting. Dauphinais and Levering have done a masterful job of presenting the major themes of Thomas’ thought in a clear, concise, and yet faithful fashion. Anyone wanting to begin to study Thomas could not find a better starting point than this book. An added blessing is that the book will lead the reader to a deeper love and appreciation of the Christian Gospel. Aquinas himself would heartily approve.” —Thomas G. Weinandy, O.F.M., Cap., University of Oxford “The strength of this book is to give an overview of Aquinas’ theological developments in prose that is accessible to nearly everyone. It is a remarkable piece of work.” —David B. Burrell, C.S.C., University of Notre Dame “One of St. Thomas’s many prodigies was his ability to speak, at once, as a biblical theologian and a dogmatic theologian. He is the exemplar in both fields. I know of no other introductory text that presents Thomas’s dual genius so richly, so clearly, and in a way that is accessible to ordinary lay Catholics and undergraduates.” —Scott Hahn, Franciscan University of Steubenville

Review
“[A] remarkable achievement.... This is an excellent introduction to the major themes in the writings of Thomas Aquinas, but it is more than that. It is an interpretation that helps to bring the contemporary reader back to the deepest spiritual intentions of the Master.” (Interpretation)

“This book offers us an easily accessible and well-crafted treatment of the major topics in theology, worthy of any bedside table. And as an introduction to Aquinas’ theology, the book uncovers, for both expert and novice alike, the biblical roots of his thought, which have often gone unnoticed by modern readers. . . . Dauphinais and Levering successfully introduce the reader to the spiritual and biblical dimensions of the Summa, and, as a result, convincingly demonstrate its contemplative character and that of its author.” (Toronto Journal of Theology)

“Michael Dauphinais and Matthew Levering have written an introduction to the theology of St. Thomas that is genuinely useful. Written in ordinary prose, without the clutter of scholarly apparatus, it is more than a merely pious or catechetical summary.” (First Things)

“A compact summary . . . useful not only to beginners but to scholars already familiar with St. Thomas.” (Nova et Vetera)

Thomas and Beyond Made Easy... Well, Almost
By M. G.
The authors wrote a very insightful book on the theology of St. Thomas Aquinas. It is meant to be an introduction to his work but do not be fooled. It is not light reading so I would advise the reader to take their time and read it in "chunks." It appears to be written in a prayerful spirit and their insights are so beautiful that it may cause the reader to pause and pray themselves. Hopefully, it will lead the reader to study St. Thomas further and directly. One would do well to also read the small book by Jean-Pierre Torrel,O.P. entitled "Aquinas's Summa: Background, Structure, and Reception."

However, in my opinion, I believe the authors are not merely presenting an introduction to the theology of St. Thomas Aquinas. They are also sharing their interpretation and development of some of his thought. This is not a bad thing; in fact, it is a good thing but it is difficult to discern which is St. Thomas and which is the authors' development.

Studies major works by important sculptors since Rodin in the light of different approaches to general sculptural issues to reveal the logical progressions from nineteenth-century figurative works to the conceptual work of the present.

Review

Distinguished art historian and critic Rosalind Krauss analyzes with exceptional clarity and insight the major works that have led 20th century sculpture from the traditional and figurative to the revolutionary conceptual art of the 1970s -- an art which has developed a new 'syntax' that discards 'narrative' for instantaneous impact and boldly breaks new ground. Beginning with a penetrating study of Rodin's modernity in rejecting 'narrative' in his 'The Gates of Hell,' she moves successively through detailed examinations of futurism, constructivism, Duchamps' 'readymades,' Brancusi, David Smith's 'Tanktotem,' sculptural realism, and the introduction of light, motion, and theatrical elements into sculpture by Picabia, Calder, Oldenburg, and others right up to younger sculptors like Carl Andre, Blochner, and others [including Robert Morris, Don Judd, Richard Serra, Sol Le Witt, Robert Smithson, and Michael Heizer]. As critic and theorist, Krauss makes demands that will challenge even the most sophisticated.

(Publishers Weekly)

...Krauss's book is undoubtedly the best treatment of its subject yet written. As a textbook, it ought to raise the level of discourse in art history classes, for it is the meaning, not the chronology, of sculpture since Rodin that is the book's central concern. Krauss avoids the conventional plodding survey and divides the book into a sequence of 'case studies' that permit sustained attention to specific works and artists. In so doing, she attempts to trace a 'tradition' to stand behind that portion of American sculpture of the past 15 years which she espouses critically.

(Art in America)

The book is well illustrated in black and white and is, for an art book, of a convenient and manageable size. The text is rigorously formalistic and analytical and organized around specific sculptural considerations such as the treatment of narrative time, the handling of space, and the game strategies of surrealist sculpture. It is an approach that pays off particularly well in the author's discussions of Rodin and David Smith.

Review
"Distinguished art historian and critic Rosalind Krauss analyzes with exceptional clarity and insight the major works that have led 20th century sculpture from the traditional and figurative to the revolutionary conceptual art of the 1970s--an art which has developed a new 'syntax' that discards 'narrative' for instantaneous impact and boldly breaks new ground. As critic and theorist, Krauss makes demands that will challenge even the most sophisticated." Publishers Weekly "...Krauss's book is undoubtedly the best treatment of its subject yet written. In so doing, she attempts to trace a 'tradition' to stand behind that portion of American sculpture of the past 15 years which she espouses critically." An impressive achievement
By Tomas Hribek
This is Krauss's first book, and the one I like best. Her history of modern sculpture from Rodin to Robert Smithson is grounded in a sophisticated theoretical perspective, but it's not collapsing under the weight of theory like many later Krauss's texts. Her theoretical framework in this early book is phenomenological -- she made a transition to structuralist and poststructuralist theories later in the seventies. Phenomenology -- in particular, Merleau-Pontyan phenomenology -- allows for many thought-provoking readings of modern sculpture. However, the basic assumption of the book -- viz., that there have been some parallels between the development of modern sculpture and phenomenological thought -- is flawed. There is no evidence that the artists discussed by Krauss heard of Husserl and Merleau-Ponty and their theories. Many other authors beside Krauss make a similar unjustified assumption of various "parallelisms" and "influences." Basically, this is historicism -- a belief in some sort of Zeitgeist at work in all cultural forms of a particular age. Still, the book makes for a much more rewarding read that coutless superficial, merely descriptive histories of modern sculpture, or modern art in general.

Krauss gives a comprehensive analysis of modern sculpture in this book. I give it four stars because krauss' syntax made some parts confusing to read.

Jonathan Edwards and the Catholic Vision of Salvation, by Anri Morimoto

Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) has been acclaimed as the quintessential puritan of eighteenth-century America who defined not only what Puritanism was, but also what American Christianity would become. Anri Morimoto finds that Edwards's theology, once regarded as disarrayed, precarious, and dangerously unorthodox, is in fact consistent and integral to his general ontology and natural philosophy. By presenting Edwards's vision of salvation as a dynamic process of sharing God's excellence and holiness, Morimoto presents a new paradigm that is radically inclusive, yet theologically responsible.By discussing Edwards in relation to Roman Catholic traditions, Morimoto places him in the context of a broader Christian tradition rather than that of New England Puritanism. Morimoto argues that this view of salvation was not new to the Protestant tradition--in fact, this view was present in Luther, Calvin, and much of the Reformed tradition--but Edwards accented it more clearly and emphatically than anyone else. Morimoto concludes that one does not have to surrender or compromise one's theology to promote ecumenical harmony. This study will be of interest to scholars, teachers and students of theology and religion, church leaders and lay persons of all denominations, evangelical or liberal, and especially those interested in Edwards, Puritanism, and early American intellectual history.

Review

“This is a significant contribution to both Edwardsean studies and Christian theology. It does a better job than anything else I know of illustrating the bridges between Edwards and Roman Catholic theology. His work has the potential of opening up a new dialogue between Reformed and Catholic theologians.”

—Gerald McDermott, Roanoke College

A Surprisingly Good Read
By Robert Huffstedtler
Morimoto seeks to recast Edwards theology of conversion, justification, sanctification, and glorification in a more ecumenical context than what he calls "textbook protestantism". In a way, this makes sense, in that Edwards is without a doubt the foremost American theologian yet to emerge. On the other hand, it's a little weird, in that Edwards himself did not interact much with Roman Catholicism. In fact, most of Edwards works are very much defined by the intellectual climate of 18th century New England, and the theological confrontation with New England "Arminianism".
Morimoto compares Edwards primarily to Roman orthodoxy as defined by Aquinas and the Council of Trent. In doing so, he shows that many of the differences stem from an inability or unwillingness of both protestants and the defenders of Roman orthodoxy to understand the terminology being used by the other side.
Morimoto also offers frequent comparisons between Edwards and the first generation of reformers (Luther, Calvin, Bucer, etc.). The examples he chooses suggests that Edwards formulations are more in line with historical protestantism than much of modern protestantism, and that the very things (such as his definition of faith) that have embarrassed some Edwards scholars like Perry Miller because they seemed to lean toward Roman doctrinal formulations are in fact the points at which Edwards most strongly echoes the early reformers.
Morimoto observes that recent Edwards scholarship has been more cognizant of this fact. From this, he suggests that the current Protestant and Roman understandings of salvation are closer than they have been at any time in the last three centuries.
Morimoto's thesis is an interesting one, and he supports it well from primary sources. If nothing else, this book should stimulate the thought of its readers and perhaps some interesting debate.

Edwards and ecumenism
By Charles R. Williams
Morimoto analyses Edwards "catholic" soteriology and shows it to be consistent with the thinking of the great Reformers. The study highlights the compatibility between at least some reformation traditions and the doctrines of Trent on justification. He is successful in showing that much of the disagreement between Reformation teaching and Tridentine Catholicism are differences in the way words are used to describe a shared understanding. These differences became hardened into theological systems that until recently have seemed to both sides to be incompatible.
Anyone interested in ecumenism grounded in the common search for the truth will find this book very useful and enlightening.

The President and Congress in Postauthoritarian Chile: Institutional Constraints to Democratic Consolidation, by Peter M. Siavelis

As many formerly authoritarian regimes have been replaced by democratic governments in Latin America, Eastern Europe, and elsewhere, questions have arisen about the stability and durability of these new governments. One concern has to do with the institutional arrangements for governing bequeathed to the new democratic regimes by their authoritarian predecessors and with the related issue of whether presidential or parliamentary systems work better for the consolidation of democracy.

In this book, Peter Siavelis takes a close look at the important case of Chile, which had a long tradition of successful legislative resolution of conflict but was left by the Pinochet regime with a changed institutional framework that greatly strengthened the presidency at the expense of the legislature. Weakening of the legislature combined with an exclusionary electoral system, Siavelis argues, undermines the ability of Chile's National Congress to play its former role as an arena of accommodation, creating serious obstacles to interbranch cooperation and, ultimately, democratic governability.

Unlike other studies that contrast presidential and parliamentary systems in the large, Siavelis examines a variety of factors, including socioeconomic conditions and characteristics of political parties, that affect whether or not one of these systems will operate more or less successfully at any given time. He also offers proposals for institutional reform that could mitigate the harm he expects the current political structure to produce.

Review

“Most casual observers consider Chile one of Latin America’s most stable new democracies, despite its incomplete transition. Siavelis makes the provocative argument that flawed institutional design will jeopardize that reputation once the consensus and cooperation of the democratic transition period wear off. He states his arguments clearly, defends them with impressive evidence, and refutes alternative views. This book is persuasive and prescient, essential reading for students of Chilean politics and highly recommended for those interested in the impact of institutions on politics.”

—Michael Coppedge, University of Notre Dame

“The political and historical complexity of the Chilean transition has made it one of the most intensely studied of Latin America’s new democracies. Siavelis’s book provides the tools to understand how the new rules of competition and policy-making affect the main actors and shape the policies they produce. The author presents the highly charged issues of military prerogatives, constitutional structure, and electoral reform in a fashion that is both theoretically informed and accessible. The book will be an excellent addition to Latin American politics syllabi at either the undergraduate or graduate level.”

—John M. Carey, Journal of Interamerican Studies and World Affairs

“Observers of Latin American politics have long ignored constitutional and institutional arrangements as important variables in interpreting the course of politics in the area. Siavelis (Wake Forest) provides an important and much-needed corrective to this oversight. This well-researched and sophisticated study repays repeated reading.”

—E.A. Duff, Choice

“Peter Siavelis provides a detailed and intelligent account of the way in which the structure of executive-legislative relations impedes the consolidation of democracy in Chile, and the book is doubly valuable because the author is constantly aware of the historical and socio-economic contexts in which those institutions operate.

This book is firmly rooted in the institutional school of analysis and is a model of its kind. This sort of approach is long overdue in the study of Latin American political systems. It is well-written and well-researched, and makes a strong and convincing case for criticizing the structure of executive-congressional relations in Chile. Though the author’s emphasis on the future destabilizing effects of crisis is not so convincing, nevertheless this is one of the best analytical accounts of Chilean politics to have appeared in recent years.”

—Alan Angell, Journal of Latin American Studies

Frauenlob's Song of Songs: A Medieval German Poet and His Masterpiece, by Barbara Newman

“Frauenlob” was the stage name of Heinrich von Meissen (c. 1260–1318), a medieval German poet-minstrel. A famous and controversial figure in his day, Frauenlob (meaning “praise of ladies”) exercised a strong influence on German literature into the eighteenth century. This book introduces the poet to English-speaking readers with a fresh poetic translation of his masterpiece, the Marienleich—a virtuosic poem of more than 500 lines in praise of the Virgin Mary.

Barbara Newman, known for her pathbreaking translation of Hildegard of Bingen’s Symphonia, brilliantly captures the fervent eroticism of Frauenlob’s language. More than the mother of Jesus, the Lady of Frauenlob’s text is a celestial goddess, the eternal partner of the Trinity. Like Christ himself she is explicitly said to have two natures, human and divine. Frauenlob lets the Lady speak for herself in an unusual first-person text of self-revelation, crafted from the Song of Songs, the Biblical wisdom books, the Apocalypse, and a wide array of secular materials ranging from courtly romance to Aristotelian philosophy.

Included with the book is a CD recording of the Marienleich by the noted ensemble Sequentia, directed by Benjamin Bagby and the late Barbara Thornton. The surviving music is the composer’s own, reconstructed from fragmentary manuscript sources. Accompanying Newman’s translation is a facing-page edition of the German text, detailed commentary, and a critical study presenting the most thorough discussion to date of Frauenlob’s oeuvre, social context, philosophical ideas, sources, language, music, and influence. Rescuing a long forgotten medieval masterpiece, Frauenlob’s Song of Songs will fascinate students and scholars of the Middle Ages as well as scholars, performers, and connoisseurs of early music.

Review

“The need for a readable Frauenlob translation has existed for a long time. Now, consistent with her reputation as one of the preeminent scholars in the field of medieval studies, Barbara Newman has produced that translation, capturing the vibrant spirit of the Marienleich in clear, lively English.”

—Anne Winston-Allen, Southern Illinois University

“This is a book intended for all those mature enough in their appreciation of beauty to stomach the strong wine of two of the Virgin Mary’s most sophisticated devotees. Heinrich von Meißen’s Marienleich offers the reader a scintillating yet mysterious vision of Mary as the goddess of the heavenly Jerusalem; Newman’s translucent commentary on, introduction to, and translation of the poem unlocks its mysteries as only a consummate lover of theology, history, and poetry can. The combination is a treat to be savored, rolled over on the tongue until its complexity gives forth its astonishing sweetness.”

—Rachel Fulton, author of From Judgment to Passion: Devotion to Christ and the Virgin Mary, 800-1200

“Frauenlob’s Song of Songs is a gorgeous publication, clearly and forcefully written, stunningly laid out and carefully edited. . . . It comes with all the scholarly trappings, but also with a CD of a beautiful, hour-long recording of Heinrich’s composition, essential to appreciating this song.”

—Bettina Bildhauer, Times Literary Supplement

“Scholars from many disciplines will surely find this delightfully well-written book stimulating. I believe that it will be accessible and interesting to students as well. The outstanding scholarly apparatus (commentary, glossary, indices, full bibliography) intensifies the book’s usefulness as a textbook by simplifying ease of understanding and access to learned and biblical allusions.”

—Ann Marie Rasmussen, Journal of English and Germanic Philology

“Newman’s own enthusiasm for her subject comes through in every line of this stimulating book which, I believe, is of interest not only to scholars of medieval literature and theology but also makes accessible to students a work of religious poetry which joins together with incomparable vitality emotion and reason, poetry, and theology.”

—Kerstin Pfeiffer, Literature and Theology

exciting and erudite translation, gorgeous CD, brilliant commentary
By Steve Rozenski
Barbara Newman has given us a rich treasure of a book: the Middle High German text and her verse translation of this mysterious, beautiful poem take up only the first forty-one pages. The remaining 200 are, in effect, a thoroughly-researched and illuminating monograph offering both a detailed contextualization and a fine-tuned close-reading of Frauenlob's magnum opus, the Marienleich (Lay of Our Lady) or Canticum Canticorum (Song of Songs). In addition, a CD is attached to the back cover, offering the reader a chance to hear a performance of the Lay by the eminent early-music ensemble Sequentia. This tremendous volume has much to offer a rich variety of readers and listeners, and to my mind undoubtedly deserves a correspondingly wide audience.

The poem itself is an astonishingly intricate account of a celestial woman, first introduced in the third-person (in the first third of the poem) and later speaking directly to us in the first-person. Although the poem is often called the Marienleich, Newman stresses that this is description of the celestial woman is too narrow by far: "although she is the earthly mother of Christ, she is also the eternal partner of the Trinity and the life-giving principle of Nature" (xi). The facing-page translation is a bravura accomplishment, demonstrating a keen appreciation of the original and a poetic voice that allows Frauenlob's brilliance and audacity to be appreciated by a contemporary Anglophone readership (she wisely counsels those "who desire a keener sense of Frauenlob's metrical virtuosity, his exotic coinages, his wild chiming music, and his fervent baroque piety" [xvii] to learn Middle High German or, failing that, read the poetry of nineteenth-century Jesuit Gerard Manley Hopkins).

Frauenlob's ecstatic, gloriously hyperbolic praise of the "sublime Feminine" finds a warm reception in Newman's text. In dealing with the misogynistic tradition and the consequent lack of women among Frauenlob's patrons and poet-peers, she is generous enough to state simply "this is not Frauenlob's fault; he did not create the culture in which he sang" (62). This strikes me as a refreshingly direct way to dismiss those who would judge the past by contemporary standards, only to find the past inevitably wanting. Newman is also entirely frank about the tremendous amount of sexual and erotic imaginative energy generated by the reception of the Song of Songs (here applied to Mary's conception of Christ -- the Celestial Lady boldly declares "I slept with three" in elucidating the Trinitarian nature of the event) an approach that moves beyond the stale century-old Freudian schema of sublimation without gingerly ignoring the central role that allegories of intercourse played in shaping many aspects of devotional discourse.

This accomplished, learned volume also aims to serve as something of an ambassador: Newman seems -- like me -- to be baffled, even somewhat frustrated, by the relative lack of Anglophone interest in medieval German texts. For a host of reasons, German texts have received far less attention in British and American medieval studies than their French or Italian counterparts. With this book, she makes an impassioned case for the inclusion of Frauenlob's masterpiece in a broader European canon of medieval poetry, Marian devotion, and mysticism. Newman's exuberance and enthusiasm, both in writing and teaching, have inspired many; I earnestly hope this volume will inspire still more.

Gods of the Andes: An Early Jesuit Account of Inca Religion and Andean Christianity (Latin American Originals), by Sabine Hyland

Gods of the Andes provides the first English translation of the earliest lengthy description of Inca religion, An Account of the Ancient Customs of the Natives of Peru (1594). The Account is part of a Jesuit tradition of ecumenical works on religion that encompasses the more famous writings of Matteo Ricci in China and Roberto de Nobili in India. It includes original descriptions of many different aspects of Inca religion, including human sacrifice, the use of hallucinogens, mummification rituals, the existence of transgendered priests in the ancient Andes, divination rituals based on animal entrails, oracles, burials, and confession.

In her introductory chapters, Sabine Hyland presents the controversial life of the ascribed author, Blas Valera, a Jesuit who was ultimately imprisoned and exiled by the Jesuits for his “heretical” belief that the Incas worshipped the same creator god the Christians did; examines the Account in the light of other colonial writings about the Incas; and outlines what we know about Inca religion through other sources, comparing Valera’s version to those of other writers.

Review

“This work is an exciting addition to the field. It presents a source hitherto unavailable in English; it illustrates aspects of Spanish views of Andean religion that are often neglected; and it considers issues of great contemporary relevance, such as the problem of translation of Christian concepts into native languages. Both the translation and the accompanying substantial commentary are highly readable, and therefore suitable for undergraduate readers and the general reader. This is a scholarly, original, and interesting work.”

—Nicholas Griffiths, University of Birmingham

“Not all Spanish missionaries were out to extinguish native Andean religious practices and concepts as works of the devil. Sabine Hyland has focused on an extraordinary mestizo Jesuit, Blas Valera, whose highly sympathetic and perceptive account of the Inca gods and worldview has been vividly brought to life by her excellent translation. This is a major contribution to Andean history and anthropology.”

—Michael D. Coe, Yale University

“This translation of An Account of the Ancient Customs of the Natives of Peru is a wonderful addition to the corpus of meticulously edited colonial chronicles available in English. The lengthy and careful treatment of Andean religion by the Jesuit priest Blas Valera is distinctive and fascinating, and its importance is enhanced by our knowledge that, unlike many chroniclers, Valera spoke and understood Quechua and was exposed to native religious customs in several areas. Sabine Hyland’s discussion of the life and writings of Valera successfully provides the cultural and historical context for the manuscript and greatly enriches the volume. I strongly recommend it to all scholars attempting to understand pre-Hispanic Andean religion and the early efforts of Christian missionaries.”

—Richard Burger, Yale University

“Sabine Hyland’s book revives a defiant voice from the Americas’ past. By 1594 the last generation born under Inca rule was dying off. A burgeoning colonial clergy was teaching that the ‘Indian’s’ sacred tradition had been nothing but a diabolical fraud. But even as the clergy geared up for ‘extirpation,’ some dissenters boldly claimed that Inca religion included insights into true divinity. One of these dissenters—the anonymous Jesuit whom Hyland identifies as the half-Inca Blas Valera—in 1594 took his stand by combining memories of his mother’s Inca culture with a challenge to colonial power. Hyland’s translation brings to life one vital indigenous source of the New World’s human-rights tradition.”

—Frank Salomon, University of Wisconsin–Madison

“Sabine Hyland’s concise, paperback English translation of a 1594 Peruvian manuscript is the ideal supplement and counterpoint to university courses on colonial history of the Americas or early modern religion. Part of the Latin American Originals series by Pennsylvania State University Press, the heart of this book is a fifty-page selection of a primary source, An Account of the Ancient Customs of the Natives of Peru, introduced by three succinct and well-researched chapters of background analysis. Hyland has deftly translated this anonymous unpublished Spanish manuscript. She has chosen to leave Latin, Quechua, and Aymara terms interspersed, giving special attention to the Quechua terms, which are defined in the text and compiled in a glossary. Hyland also makes a persuasive case for attributing this piece’s authorship to the controversial sixteenth-century mestizo Jesuit Blas Valera, though she relegates much of the fascinating details of determining provenance to an appendix. . . . In addition to its Jesuit authorship, the work is significant because it presents unique information and opinions about the Inca religion soon after the Spanish conquest. The Account ends with a passionate diatribe against Spanish tactics used to convert native Andeans to Christianity. It therefore stands to complicate the better-known and frequently assigned primary-source writings about colonial Andean religion, such as works by Jesuits José de Acosta (Natural and Moral History of the Indies, 1590) and Bernabe Cobo (History of the Inca Empire, 1653), both more conciliatory about missionary methods; and works that are more critical, by non-missionary Inca descendants such as Garcilaso de la Vega (Royal Commentaries of the Incas and General History of Peru, 1617) and Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala (The First New Chronicle and Good Government, 1615). This slim volume is thus positioned to handily prove the wide diversity of religious views held in sixteenth-century Peru, among the Jesuits as well as among Andean converts.”

—Karin A. Velez, Renaissance Quarterly

—Karin A. Velez, Renaissance Quarterly

“Hyland’s translation is as readable as it is faithful to the original, and has the added advantage of coming with a helpful scholarly introduction, unobtrusive annotations, and a glossary of quechua terms. It is a most welcome companion to her excellent monograph on Valera, The Jesuit and the Incas (2003), and an indispensable primary source which will be enjoyed as much by scholars as by general readers.”

—Fernando Cervantes, Journal of Ecclesiastical History

“This is a fascinating and sometimes poignant text with much of interest for ethnographers, anthropologists, historians of religion, and cultural and political theorists. All these will find food for thought in this excellent translation and essay by Sabine Hyland. . . . This small book deserves a place on many bookshelves.”
