An Indispensable Resource for Dream Studies

I am a current student in dream studies and An Introduction to the Psychology of Dreaming by Kelly Bulkeley was introduced to me as part of the curriculum for the Institute for Dream Studies in Charleston, SC headed by director and dream specialist, Justina Lasley. It was a fascinating read and I found myself deeply absorbed in this book due to its accessibility, eloquence and succinct style on an otherwise complex topic. The comprehensive way in which Bulkeley organized each subject matter, as well as how he introduced each theorist, was extremely helpful to me. I now have a better understanding of such complex figures as Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung and Frederick Perls and have discovered new pioneers in this field that I might have otherwise dismissed as being "over my head." For example, Stephen LaBerge, Ann Faraday and Gayle Delaney, who take a more modern approach to the dream but in very unique directions, are just a few I will look out for in my own research.

One of the most fascinating aspects of this book was when Dr. Bulkeley psychoanalyzed his own dream by using various theorists and their personal methodologies. I appreciated seeing the dream viewed in diverse (and surprisingly objective) ways which reminds me of the value of my own dream group in terms of gathering various perspectives. The dream itself is both rich and complex and Bulkeley's process illustrated the many layers of the dream on a personal, communal and global scale. This exercise relates to Justina Lasley's theory in that an individual can work on just one dream for her entire life. I also realize that we can learn from all perspectives even though we might not agree with them like a Crick, Mitchison or Foulkes who believe dreams carry no significant higher meaning or intention. This amazing task demonstrates Dr. Bulkeley's impressive wealth of knowledge as well as his own keen insight into dreams

There is a healthy need to challenge dream theories just as we, the dreamer, challenge the "shadow" parts of our many selves. Bulkeley notes these psychological debates in three main areas of Form, Function and Interpretation (how are dreams created, what's their significance and, finally, what does it all mean?) are clearly and thankfully ongoing. As more interest and discussion in dreaming are produced so new leaders and enterprising research studies. This is an exciting time for dreamers like Kelly Bulkeley and I can see An Introduction to the Psychology of Dreaming becoming an indispensable resource for my own personal journey.

Informative & thought provoking

This is a very neutraland informative explanation of the process of dreaming and the different theories on how to interpret dreams and find meaning with in your dreams. Bulkeley wirtes so that someone with no prior knowledge or who has been studying dreams for years can understand and really learn from what he has to say. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about dreaming from a psychological approach, but that doesn't dimiss the mystical aspect of dreams.

For those who like to see a variety of styles, this book shows many. What is a chapel? What should it look like? What should it feel like? This book has examples of many styles and sizes -- stand alone, and incorporated into other living spaces such as dormitories. Some are only open by appointment -- which I find a bit sad. But many shown here are in regular use and available for personal meditation and prayer.

Convinced that "every aspect of everyday life is ethically charged" and that academic ethics are too often "remote from life as lived," several of the country's leading conservative Christian ethical scholars launched a five-volume series of books to address "The Ethics of Everyday Life." Volume two, The Eternal Pity: Reflections on Dying, is edited by Richard John Neuhaus (editor of First Things and author, most recently, of Death on a Friday Afternoon). The book is an eclectic selection of readings regarding all manner of approaches to death and experiences of grief. It contains 26 readings from literature, poetry, and philosophy. Authors range from Montaigne to Tolstoy to Flannery O'Connor, and the book includes religious texts spanning a range marked by the Quran and the Book of Common Prayer. Neuhaus himself has provided a wide-ranging introduction to the anthology as well as a personal story about the enlivening effects of his own close brush with death. The Eternal Pity is organized in three sections, "Thinking About Dying," "When We Die," and "When Others Die," but this book should probably not be read systematically. Some are religious, many are not; some are autobiographical reflections, others are poetry or fiction. On the whole they are well chosen. The book does not push one viewpoint but offers these selections for consideration. The result is a handbook for the dying--that is, every one of us. Recommended for public libraries.

This collection of readings on death by the editor of thejournal "First Things" is not a self-help book about grieving: it offers readers a chance "simply to be present to death." Neuhaus relates the powerful tale of his own fight against advanced colon cancer seven years ago. After two emergency surgeries, he was expected to die, and remembers a moment of "an utterly lucid state of awareness" when two friendly messengers told him simply that "everything is ready now," as though it were his decision to die or to live. He lived, and now professes a radically different perspective on death. Such a transformation is evident in the pieces that make up this collection. The first section, "Twelve Classic Visions" on dying, including a touching (and quintessentially Victorian) scene from Dickens on the death of a child, and a horrifying Flannery O'Connor story about the roadside murder of an innocent family. Dylan Thomas rings true with "A Refusal to Mourn the Death, by Fire, or a Child in London." Part II, "When We Die," explores our own future deaths more pointedly. Famous scenes from Tolstoy's "Death of Ivan Ilyich" complement essays on suicide, near-death experiences, and mercy killing. The final section, "When Others Die," contains the usual suspects (C.S. Lewis's "A Grief Observed") as well as some unexpected offerings, like Milton Himmelfarb's description of saying kaddish for his deceased father. Neuhaus has done a masterful job in collecting a wide-ranging variety of stories, essays, and poems on this sobering topic. Far from being depressing,however, it is inspiring and thought-provoking. Especially effective is the personal account of Neuhaus' own "near-death" experience, and his insightful comments preceding each piece.

Aliceheimer’s is a series of illustrated vignettes, daily glimpses into their world with Alzheimer’s. In drawing Alice, Walrath literally enrobes her with cut-up pages from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. She weaves elements from Lewis Carroll’s classic throughout her text, using evocative phrases from the novel to introduce the vignettes, such as “Disappearing Alice,” “Missing Pieces,” “Falling Slowly,” “Curiouser and Curiouser,” and “A Mad Tea Party.”

Walrath writes that creating this book allowed her not only to process her grief over her mother’s dementia, but also “to remember the magic laughter of that time.” Graphic medicine, she writes, “lets us better understand those who are hurting, feel their stories, and redraw and renegotiate those social boundaries. Most of all, it gives us a way to heal and to fly over the world as Alice does.” In the end, Aliceheimer’s is indeed strangely and utterly uplifting.

Like the illustrations

As an artist, art therapist, and daughter of a mother with Alzheimers, I was thrilled, encouraged and comforted by this book. Walrath's format and excerpts of caring for her mother are creative and sensitively wrought. The illustrations are lively, humorous and provocative. The total work is framed as a journey of moments shared and transformed - both past and present. Her comments and direct responses are heartfelt and helpful. She has mastered the art of replies as caregiver that are direct, brief, honest - yet therapeutic. Not once did I have the sense that she was unaware of the person beneath the layers of the disease. The journey is difficult, yet brought back repeatedly as moments in time possible to simplify and reassure based on sensitivity, respect. Like the illustrations, these moments are open ended yet grounded. While informative, Aliceheimer's does not read like an instruction manual. It reads more like a love story, and a second chance at making a stronger connection. It reminds me that authenticity of the moment can be possible in this challenging journey. Many times I was surprised how Walrath could hit on the core of an incident, based on shared memories of her mother as well as present situation.

Images of women were ubiquitous in America at the turn of the last century. In painting and sculpture, they took on a bewildering variety of identities, from Venus, Ariadne, and Diana to Law, Justice, the Arts, and Commerce. Bailey Van Hook argues here that the artists' concept of art coincided with the construction of gender in American culture. She finds that certain characteristics such as 'ideal,' 'beautiful,' 'decorative,' and 'pure' both describe this art and define the perceived role of women in American society at the time. Most late nineteenth-century American artists had trained in Paris, where they learned to use female imagery as a pictorial language of provocative sensuality. Van Hook first places the American artists in an international context by discussing the works of their French teachers, including Jean-Léon Gérôme and Alexandre Cabanel. She goes on to explore why they soon had to distance themselves from that context, primarily because their art was perceived as either openly sensual or too obliquely foreign by American audiences. Van Hook delineates the modes of representation the American painters chose, which ranged from the more traditional allegorical or mythological subjects to a decorative figure painting indebted to Whistler. Changing American culture ultimately rejected these idealized female images as too genteel and, eventually, too academic and European. Angels of Art is the first study to discuss the predominance of images of women across stylistic boundaries and within the wider context of European art. It relies heavily on contemporary sources both to document critical responses and to find intersecting patterns in attitudes toward women and art.

This is a good introduction book to Environmental Regulation

This is a good introduction book to Environmental Regulation, while it is small it covers a broad area of information. I cannot say it is fun read but is informative and I would consider a great compliment to any Environmental Regulation class.
