ideal and essential on "New World" spiritism

This book provides a history and insight on the roots of Latin American spiritism. Its research on roots of Allen Kardec and the reason why French spiritism was brought to the "New World". It earns its place in the subjects of Latin American religion and ideology. Its cultural background of Brazil gives much insight to the ideological background of the Brazilian population. Even as a person of Caribbean background, I hold this book in regards to a part of my background ideologically. This book is an eye opener to the researcher interested in South American and Caribbean studies.

As was true of many American cities, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, adopted urban renewal programs in the postwar years to revitalize a downtown that was experiencing economic decline. As the commercial and residential infrastructure of the city decayed, people and jobs migrated to the suburbs. Urban renewal was supposed to make the downtown viable again as a site for both businesses and residences. But as David Schuyler shows in A City Transformed, redevelopment in Lancaster resulted in more failures than successes.

Beginning in the 1950s, the Lancaster Redevelopment Authority implemented a comprehensive revitalization program that changed the physical shape of the city. In attempting to solidify the retail functions of the traditional central business district, redevelopment dramatically altered key blocks of the downtown, replacing handsome turn-of-the-century Beaux Arts structures with modernist concrete boxes and a sterile public square. The strategy for eliminating density and blighted buildings resulted in the demolition of whole blocks of dwellings and, perhaps more importantly, destabilized Lancaster's African American community.

A City Transformed is a compelling examination of a northern city struggling with its history and the legacy of segregation. But the redevelopment projects undertaken by the city, however ambitious, could not overcome the suburban growth that continues to sprawl over the countryside or the patterns of residential segregation that define city and suburb. When the Redevelopment Authority ceased operating in 1980, its legacy was a city with a declining economy, high levels of poverty and joblessness, and an increasing concentration of racial and ethnic minorities—a city very much at risk. In important ways what happened in Lancaster was the product of federal policies and national trends. As Schuyler observes, Lancaster's experience is the nation's drama played on a local stage.

About the Author

David Schuyler is Professor of American Studies at Franklin & Marshall College. He is the author of Apostle of Taste: Andrew Jackson Downing, 1815-1852 (1996) and The New Urban Landscape: The Redefinition of City Form in Nineteenth-Century America (1986). He serves on the editorial board of the Frederick Law Olmsted Papers project and is chair of the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Board.

Must-read for City of Lancaster developers, planners and concerned residents

Schuyler's terrific book examines the important (and tragic, in many ways) slice of city history from 1940-1980. He examines the many reasons for decay in the City of Lancaster and walks through the account of how the once-vibrant block of 100 North Queen Street was converted from theaters, shops and hotels into the now-derelict Lancaster Square. You don't need to be a historian to enjoy this book. If you love the City of Lancaster and are passionate about maintaining and protecting the city you love, this book is a must-read.

Snooze fest

Written by an academic who needs to learn how to write for a popular audience. The topic for this book is fascinating. This author manages to make it boring and flat. This would be a nice book for a student of city planning, but it's dry and boring for someone who wants to know the story of a city's demise. There is little to no local "stories." Why didn't the author interview folks who moved out? Why did you leave? Why did you stay? What were people's lives like before the war and after? The author never looks at any of this.

He was later employed as a gilt-edged market maker and treasury trader at ABN Amro Hoare Govett Sterling Bonds, where he ran the short-dated gilt book, the gilt repo book and the sterling money markets book, and was also responsible for stocks borrowing and lending and interbank funding. From there he moved on to Hambros Bank, where he set up and ran the Treasury division's sterling proprietary trading desk. He has also worked as a strategy and risk management consultant to some of the world's leading investment banks, before joining JPMorgan Chase capital markets in 2000.

Moorad has an MA in Econometrics from Reading University and an MBA from Henley Management College. He has taught courses on bond and money markets subjects for organizations both in the City of London and abroad, and has lectured at City University Business School. He is a member of the Securities Institute and the Global Association of Risk Professionals, and sits on the examination panel of the Securities Institute Bond and Fixed Income Markets Diploma paper.

Poor Introductory Text

This text can hardly qualify as a reference for any purpose. It is not technical enough for academics and scholars and not accurate enough for practitioners. It is utterly useless save some funny typos, such as internet rates instead of interest rates.
There are better alternatives from Fabozzi, Tuckman and Jarrow.

Very good overview book of fixed income securities

This is a high-quality book on fixed income securities, it combines institutional details as well as bond maths and analysis. There is a good intro to mathematical concepts for beginners. Especially useful is the bibliography at the end of each chapter, whch details further reading, but has the author's personal run-down of each recommended title. This is helpful for further research. The book is also very good value-for-money. Highly recommended....

The outsiders of the title are women, homosexuals and Jews. The section on homosexuals is very homophobic, all the more shameful for having been written by an intellectual who was himself homosexual. His view of homosexuality in ancient Greece is complete nonsense. He presents the Greeks as having exactly the same attitude as the Israelites, as if the Greeks had the Bible as a guide.

Detailed accounts of sexual, psychological ,and ministerial abuses abound. Yes people have died because of this movement as the sad case of Audrey Reynolds documents. Minuses: Howard uses too many acronyms. He misidentifies Rodney Harold-Browne as an American, he's actually South African.

He identifies the crucial moment in the epistemological history of narrative when, at the end of the eighteenth century, a new structural affiliation between truth and time emerged.

This book examines novels by four authors—Balzac, Stendhal, Dostoevsky, and Tolstoy—as well as the writings of leading European intellectuals and philosophers. Kliger argues that the “realist” novel can be conceived as prompting us (and giving us the means) to think of truth differently, as immanent in a temporal shape rather than transcendent in a principle, a fact, or a higher order.
