Insightful, but less economics and more psychology

Very well written in terms of technical coverage and originality of modelling bounded rationality and its application to game theory. However, the author develops most of his theories from either assumption and speculation or no justification at all in terms of formally depicting human rationality. It would have been a much more powerful book if there was a greater coverage of empirical evidence and bridging between psychology, artificial intelligence and economics. This lop-sided approach of modelling using solely game theoretic terminology and concepts ambiguous in their relevancy to simulating human thought and behaviour. However, there are some chapters, such as the one on knowledge representation and the other on limited memory that are the exception to this. Overall though, the book is still quite innovative and worth a read.

Fun with bounded rationality

This is a terrific book for anyone who wants to know more about tractable ways to relax the usual economist's assumption of perfect rationality. The book is well written and includes some exercises which would lead an ambitious reader to write his own book on the topic. If you are interested in bounded rationality, this is a book you should own.

Written by ten distinguished Dante scholars, the essays in Dante Now represent the most significant areas of contemporary Dante studies. This collection, originating from a 1993 University of Notre Dame conference, includes some of the newest and most exciting work in contemporary Dante studies and focuses in particular on three intensely cultivated areas: poetics, "minor works", and reception. The stimulating ferment on the problem of Dante's poetics is well represented in the first three essays. These range in approach from the stylistic-ideological treatment of Zygmunt G. Baranski's essay, to the inter- and intratextual concerns presented by Christopher Kleinhenz, to the compelling hermeneutical and epistemological reflections on Dante's poetics given by Giuseppe Mazzotta. Dante's so-called minor works have increasingly become a focus of attention in contemporary Dante studies, and the textual problems represented by the Vita nuova are sweepingly reconsidered by Dino S. Cervigni and Edward Vasta. Ronald L. Martinez dedicates a substantial essay to Dante's poem of exile "Tre donne", and Albert Russell Ascoli addresses the issue of the relationship between Dante's Commedia and the minor works, especially the Monarchia. The final section of essays examines the phenomenon of the original and continuing vitality of Dante's work as a profoundly influential, enduring, and enlivening literary classic. R. A. Shoaf addresses the literary influence of Dante in medieval England; Kevin Brownlee investigates Dante's most important medieval French connection in the works of Christine de Pizan; and Brian Richardson considers the Commedia's fortunes during the Renaissance in terms of its remarkableeditorial and publishing history. Finally, Nancy J. Vickers illuminates Dante's translatability into avante garde films and videos.

"Brand You": a valuable guide for executives developing their career

The objective of this excellent book is disarmingly simple: "If you make it easier for people to see what you do and how you do it, their perception will be aligned with reality". BRAND YOU shows the reader how to achieve this by leading them through a series of simple but effective steps beginning with self-awareness and on to articulation and dissemination. First comes understanding your "talents" and "values" and then what you really want to do - your "purpose". These are combined in a USP: "What makes you different is your unique combination of skills and experiences", which forms the bedrock of your personal brand. Using an analogy from the world of luxury goods, John Purkiss and David Royston-Lee remind us that successful luxury brands must combine heritage and contemporary relevance to be effective. Having confirmed the true you - "if you are true to your talents and your values, you will be authentic" - the book continues by providing lots of practical advice about how to communicate your brand, be it on your CV, your Web site, or in conversation and meetings. This is an area where the book cleverly applies the concept of branding to people, capturing aspects not associated with product brands such as "presence", in a valuable section covering personal effectiveness. The book concludes with practical chapters on salary and increasing your brand visibility.

The approach taken by the authors is both practical, with simple yet effective exercises to help the reader deepen his/her self-awareness, and erudite, for example tracing the origins and endurance of branding (recall the Lion of St. Mark as a visible symbol of imperial Venice in areas it controlled) and cautioning against listing USP's in the plural, when others too may possess them.

BRAND YOU is full of valuable advice for anyone looking to develop their career, written in a style which is both accessible and compelling. While the book also deals at length with more traditional offline personal branding, in a world of social networking, Google, Facebook and Twitter, we ignore our online brand at our peril.

Branding: It's Not Just for Conservatives!

A deeply cynical person such as myself usually steers clear of business titles, so I was pleasantly surprised with Brand You. This book is probably the first self-help book I've read thoroughly, done all the exercises, and learned something from in the whole process. As someone who put away everything from The Artist's Way to the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius due to lack of interest, this testimony speaks for itself.

As a former Marxist with a distrust of selling anything, I've never heard of portfolio careers or any of the business terms that crop up in the text. It seems almost sacrilegious, really, how the authors casually mention Che Guevara and Mao Zedong as examples of successful personal branding. Perhaps that's their point--even radicals have to push their ideas effectively to achieve their goals.

Branding goes beyond selling; it requires huge amounts of self-awareness. The book aims to help people rediscover themselves, and encourage (not necessarily exploit) a positive, authentic image that can attract like-minded individuals.

While trying to find an inner archetype sounds hooky, with some patience and self-deprecation, Brand You can be an invaluable career tool and a crash course in self-actualization.

He directs attention to the venues, the contemporary debates those venues engendered, and the critical discourses in which they participated. Great book about low-budget exhibitions in post WWI Paris.

This book reminds me of Dark Matter, a recent book on the current state of art shows. It seems that in post WWI France, art shows were more of a “guerilla” effort, with art being displayed in storefronts, apartment, or improvised public venues (without permission of the authorities.) Dadaism had come along, and Marcel Duchamp’s found-object pieces were getting him a lot of attention. Man Ray’s minimalist photos were being shown in storefront windows, and in Germany, there were countless art shows in converted factories.

Perhaps the origin of all this is the availability of spaces in post WWI France? So many men were killed that there was a surplus of everything. More women were in the workforce, and old norms and mores were vanishing. The public tolerance was more open to weird behavior, no better illustrated than the name “Dada.” My research shows that the word mean “wooden rocking horse,” and if you’re wondering how the movement got its name, history says that an artist flipped through a dictionary and randomly put his finger in. The word he stopped on was Dada. Another page or so, and the movement might’ve been called “eggplant.”

One of the most interesting chapters was on the aspects of colonialism in the era. There were massive exhibitions of the French colonies in Paris from the 1920’s onward, and they made colonialism look great. Beautiful posters advertising the exhibits in bright colors, and huge halls full of art, weapons, photos, costumes, and souvenirs from the French colonies in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and the West Indies. Even the left wing presses were impressed, and few gave any thought to the injustices of colonialism. The French viewed the exotic colonies and their peoples as the “sunshine” to their rainy cities.

In tough economic times, the chance of selling artwork often diminishes, as is occurring now. The result is always the same; artists move to cheaper cities, and they care less about making the artwork “pleasing.” Knowing they won’t be able to sell, they indulge in all manner of unusual (and often silly) activities, arousing controversy and acclaim at the same time. Take for instance the massive attention given to graffiti artists in Brooklyn, New York. It’s far cheaper to paint in spray paint on someone else’ wall than to buy canvas and oils, and you don’t have to worry about fitting a giant canvas into a tiny apartment.

Best of all, you get to have your artwork displayed for all to see. Like it or not, they’ll have no choice but to look at it, at least until someone whitewashes it.

Magda Portal (1900–1989) played a historic role in the American Popular Revolutionary Alliance (APRA), which began as a Marxist-inspired but non-Communist radical movement with cells based in both Europe and Latin America in the 1920s before it became a full-fledged political party in Peru in 1931. Often in exile abroad, in prison, or in hiding in Peru to escape arrest, Portal was the leading female organizer for the Apristas until her break with the increasingly Right-leaning party after World War II. As APRA’s national secretary for women’s affairs, Portal worked tirelessly for women’s rights within the framework of a broader fight for social justice. A close colleague of revolutionary leaders José Carlos Mariátegui and Victor Raúl Haya de la Torre, she sided with the latter in the schism that erupted between the two in 1928, but ended up denouncing Haya de la Torre in 1950, accusing him of compromised relationships with the powers of neocolonial capitalism.

Already an acclaimed poet by the age of twenty-three, Portal struggled throughout her life to balance her artistic with her political ambitions, at times abandoning her literary pursuits. This conflict is itself a fascinating part of this biography of a woman now regarded as one of the pioneer feminists of Latin America. About the Author

Kathleen Weaver has translated four books from Spanish, including Omar Cabezas’s Fire from the Mountain, with an introduction by Carlos Fuentes (1985), and Julio Cortázar’s Nicaraguan Sketches, with her own introduction (1989). She also co-edited The Other Voice: Twentieth-Century Women’s Poetry in Translation (1976) and The Penguin Book of Women Poets (1978).

Finally, Magda Portal

This is an in-depth study of a feminist activist and poet well known in Peru but not yet here. Kathleen Weaver did years of digging to give us the political context. Many of Latin America's intellectuals and writers had to flee repression and dictatorship. What they learned abroad - and then in many cases brought home - is one fascinating theme of this book. Magda and her friends put a Peruvian stamp on European ideas, however. Magda's love life is here as is her devoted life as a mother and, blessedly, her poems, translated by an an expert, for Kathleen Weaver is herself a poet.

I hope that the press will bring this book out in paper soon so that many more may have access to it.
