Computational Explorations in Cognitive Neuroscience: Understanding the Mind

The goal of computational cognitive neuroscience is to understand how the brain embodies the mind by using biologically based computational models comprising networks of neuronlike units. This text, based on a course taught by Randall O'Reilly and Yuko Munakata over the past several years, provides an in-depth introduction to the main ideas in the field. The neural units in the simulations use equations based directly on the ion channels that govern the behavior of real neurons, and the neural networks incorporate anatomical and physiological properties of the neocortex. Thus the text provides the student with knowledge of the basic biology of the brain as well as the computational skills needed to simulate large-scale cognitive phenomena.

The text consists of two parts. The first part covers basic neural computation mechanisms: individual neurons, neural networks, and learning mechanisms. The second part covers large-scale brain area organization and cognitive phenomena: perception and attention, memory, language, and higher-level cognition. The second part is relatively self-contained and can be used separately for mechanistically oriented cognitive neuroscience courses. Integrated throughout the text are more than forty different simulation models, many of them full-scale research-grade models, with friendly interfaces and accompanying exercises. The simulation software (PDP++, available for all major platforms) and simulations can be downloaded free of charge from the Web. Exercise solutions are available, and the text includes full information on the software.

A new paradigm
By A Customer
In this book, research themes, which include perception, memory, language as well as high-level cognition, are explained in terms of computation. Their theory is based on brain science, computer science, and psychology. Though the authors speculate about the functions of each part of the brain and the relation among them to some extent, the authors propose a new paradigm to existing sciences. Their integrative approach and method are very simulative, and I've got a lot of hints from this book. But I don't need the usageof particular software, PDP++ in such a theoretical book. The authors explain and demonstrate their models and theories using PDP++ at the end of each chapter. If you want to study how to use PDP++ as well as their theories, this book will be extremely good one.

Jargon - Not for beginners.
By Aaron Levesque
With a background in chemistry, biology, psychology, and neuroscience, I believed a course on simulating the the brain to understand the mind would be incredibly fascinating. However, this book, in spite of various claims to be an introduction to cognitive neuroscience, is full of technical jargon that is mostly likely only understood by those familiar with the subject.

The book itself comes off as extremely condescending to any beginner who is frustrated with the book because throughout the text, the authors repeat over and over and over again some variation of, "Here is a SIMPLE example..."

****ALSO IMPORTANT TO NOTE: As for the free software you can download online, PDP++, it is prone to errors (random quitting, functions not working properly) and DOES NOT work on many newer versions of Mac OS X. You have to download a different program called Emergent, which is not compatible with what you read in this text; this is also an annoying problem.

The aspects of the book that focus on the biology of the mind are like breaths of fresh air, but every chapter inevitably leads into mind-numbing instructions and equations that are difficult to comprehend.

This is by far the most frustrating book I've had to deal with. The other one-star review was shrewd in warning undergrad students and beginners about this text.

What could possibly account for the scope and longevity of the Star Trek phenomenon? With legions of impassioned fans and a life span of 30 years and counting, the Star Trek television and film corpus has made Gene Roddenberry's creation nothing less than an American mythology. Deep Space and Sacred Time examines for the first time in book-length form the many ways Star Trek has served as a mythic reference point for American society―and suggests that an understanding of this might help us to see ourselves more clearly as a culture. Moreover, this thoughtful and thought-provoking work posits that Star Trek offers its audience a sense of hope and, in the setting of an orderly cosmos, the possibility for empowerment.

Written to appeal to thoughtful Star Trek viewers, as well as teachers and scholars, Deep Space and Sacred Time examines Trek's humanist creed, with its faith in the human capacity for compassion, growth and self-guidance. Roddenberry's optimistic vision stressed the tolerance of diversity, the central role of friendship and loyalty, an opposition to prejudice, and the rejection of organized religion and divine authority. Employing the framework of contemporary social analysis, authors Jon Wagner and Jan Lundeen reveal the evolving tension between Star Trek's liberalism and its subliminal messages of gender, race and class hegemony; yet they also take issue with the recent wave of critical scholarship that finds only homophobia, sexism, racism, and other oppressive forces dominating the Star Trek mythos. Citing hundreds of examples from the first eight Star Trek feature films and the four television series, the authors consider the ways in which Star Trek invites its audience to explore the nature of the self, the essence of humanity, the construction of gender, the possibility of utopia, and the role of narrative in shaping an intelligible cosmos.

Now I finally understand what "post-modernism" means!
By Rabbi Yonassan Gershom
I decided to read this book mostly because of the title -- as a Trekker who is also Jewish, I was interested to see what these authors had to say about "sacred time," because, as Abraham Joshua Heschel said, we Jews live more in sacred time than in sacred places. So, any book with "sacred time" in the title is bound to catch my eye.
As it turned out, their definition of "sacred time" wasn't quite the same as the Jewish one, but I still enjoyed the book. It's an excellent analysis of Star Trek from an anthropology POV. Especially useful to me was the clear, concise explanation of what "traditional," "modernist," and "post-modernist" worldviews mean in terms of how various cultures view time and the future. I had heard TOS called "modernist" and DS9 called "post-modernist" before, but could never really get a grasp on what that meant, exactly. (What can I say? I'm in the over-50 generation and haven't always kept up on the latest buzzwords.) This book clearly explained all three POVs -- traditional, modern, and post-modern -- then put them into the context of various Trek episodes. Great job!
I also enjoyed the brilliant insight that Trek has, in effect, moved primal mythology from sharing a common story about the past, to sharing a common story about the future. In centuries gone by, each culture assumed its origins story to be the "real" story, and that was a uniting factor for each group. But today, with so many cultures colliding in an ever-shrinking world, we cannot assume that we all we share the same past heroes anymore. Instead, we look to the same future heroes on Star Trek for role models and inspiration. Whether or not Trek is the "real" future is beside the point here. It has become a mythology that people use on a global level (to greater or lesser degrees), regardless of the different creation stories that make up their individual cultures' past mythologies.
I liked the fact that this book intelligently questioned some of the politically-correct criticisms of Trek that have come out in recent years. While not accepting everything on Trek at face value, this book does point out that some PC critics have bordered on the ridiculous. The authors here strike a very good balance between entering into the spirit of the Trek universe, and critically examining some of the basic assumptions that Trek makes about what the future "should be." >I highly recommend "Deep Space and Sacred Time" to anyone seriously interested in the impact of Star Trek on our modern (or is that post-modern? ) culture.

An excellent analysis
By Peter Clark
Wagner and Lundeen have added an important book to the growing repository of "serious" literature concerning Star Trek. In a sense they take over where Harrison Taylor et al left off with "Enterprise Zones", and they are not slow to suggest within their own book criticisms of that earlier work. The chapter on religion was particularly enlightening, since for me it seemed to highlight the inconsistencies inherent in Star Trek's treatment of the subject. Less caustic than Taylor's volume, its apparent gentleness does not betoken an acceptance of all things Trek.

This book explores three themes. The Eisenhower Administration's overriding Cold War goal in the oil-rich Middle East was minimizing Soviet influence. Second, Soviet support for Arab opposition to British colonialism and Israeli Zionism prompted Arab nationalists to embrace neutralism in the Cold War. Third, Eisenhower and Dulles perceived neutral Arab nationalism as virtually tantamount to pro-communism. Syria, the most xenophobic Arab state, was deemed most susceptible to Soviet enticements. This book concludes that U.S. policies in Syria went awry, provoking Syria to collaborate even more closely with the Soviet Union.

Although listening is central to human interaction, its importance is often ignored. In the rush to speak and be heard, it is easy to neglect listening and disregard its significance as a way of being with others and the world. Drawing upon insights from phenomenology, linguistics, philosophy of communication, and ethics, Listening, Thinking, Being is both an invitation and an intervention meant to turn much of what readers know, or think they know, about language, communication, and listening inside out. It is not about how to be a good listener or the numerous pitfalls that stem from the failure to listen. Rather, the purpose of the book is, first, to make readers aware of the value and importance of listening as a fundamental human ability inextricably connected with language and thought; second, to alert readers to the complexity of listening from personal, cultural, and philosophical perspectives; and third, to offer readers a way to think of listening as a mode of communicative action by which humans create and abide in the world. Lisbeth Lipari brings together historical, literary, intercultural, scientific, musical, and philosophical perspectives, as well as a range of her own personal experiences, to produce this highly readable analysis of how “the human experience of being as an ethical relation with others . . . is enacted by means of listening.”

Review

“In Listening, Thinking, Being, Lisbeth Lipari addresses “our failure to listen for the other” and the need to conceive of communication, particularly listening, beyond Western culture’s emphasis on speech, which privileges visual and spatial conceptions of the communication process.

“This beautifully written book takes the reader on a journey where the usual perspectives on language and communication are turned upside down and reconceived from an alternative standpoint. Lipari offers a complete picture, leading to an ethics of discourse: listening has a place in the ethical relation to the other, and is a source of ethical virtue. Communication and ethics flow together in the existential statement that listening brings humans into being, and ethics is enacted in listening ‘for and to the otherness of others.’

“The book will further the theoretical discussion within the fields of both communication studies and ethics. Moreover, it invites not only an intellectual and knowledge-oriented reading, but reflection on the reader's own practice of speaking and listening.

“This is an important, thought-provoking work which is sure to find an audience. It will be very useful for teaching as well as for reflection on language and on otherness for practitioners of all kinds.

“How often do you feel truly listened to? Not often. But what if listening was more important than speaking? Would our relations to each other change? If Lisbeth Lipari is right, and I think she is, the answer is yes, considerably! I only discovered her work on listening a few years ago, but I have read everything of hers ever since. In this important book, in setting out what she calls interlistening, she shows how it is possible for me to treat you as you are rather than what I think you seem to be.”

“In this well-written book, Lipari provides an analysis of how humans build ethical relationships with others through listening. In eight chapters, the author makes clear the value and importance of listening as a fundamental human ability inextricably connected with language and thought. Through a variety of philosophical, personal, and cultural perspectives, Lipari frames listening in new ways. In a particularly interesting chapter, “Communication and a Nice Knock-Down Argument,” Lipari argues that even communication in isolation is dialogic because of the ways in which words from the past reverberate with the rhetor. In a concluding chapter, Lipari argues for “attunement,” the inseparable connection between speaking and logos. Many other texts engage the importance of listening in human communication . . . but Lipari is one of few scholars to take on the daunting task of developing new philosophical approaches to this subject.”

The Ephrata Cloister was a community of radical Pietists founded by Georg Conrad Beissel (1691–1768), a charismatic mystic who had been a journeyman baker in Europe. In 1720 he and a few companions sought a new life in William Penn’s land of religious freedom, eventually settling on the banks of the Cocalico Creek in what is now Lancaster County. They called their community “Ephrata,” after the Hebrew name for the area around Bethlehem. Voices of the Turtledoves is a fascinating look at the sacred world that flourished at Ephrata.

In Voices of the Turtledoves, Jeff Bach is the first to draw extensively on Ephrata’s manuscript resources and on recent archaeological investigations to present an overarching look at the community. He concludes that the key to understanding all the various aspects of life at Ephrata—its architecture, manuscript art, and social organization—is the religious thought of Beissel and his co-leaders.

Review

“Where numerous scholars failed in past centuries to write a definitive work about Ephrata Cloister during its peak years as an ethnic, religious, and cultural curiosity in America, Jeff Bach successfully articulates the context in which Ephrata was created and functioned. His research is grounded in thorough knowledge of the European religious thought, practice, and writing that heavily influenced Ephrata’s founder and spiritual leader, Conrad Beissel.”

—Nadine A. Steinmetz, Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, Site Director of Ephrata Cloister, 1984–1995

“Bach uses the unique, mystical language of Ephrata to present an overarching view of this sacred community.”

—Review Newspaper

“Bach uses the unique, mystical language of Ephrata to present a comprehensive view of this sacred community.”

—Susquehanna Life

“Bach (Bethany Theological Seminary) has mastered the primary sources—many are in German—and deciphered the religious language and images of Ephrata’s extensive devotional literature, letters, hymns, and art. The author’s narrow focus on interpreting the religious language of Ephata will limit interest in this monograph to advanced students and scholars.”

—W.B. Bedford, Crown College, Choice

“Jeff Bach allows us to understand the ingredients of Ephrata’s theology and challenges us to explore how these particular Protestant Pietists fit into the religious smorgasbord that was colonial Pennsylvania. Voices of the Turtledoves answers many questions and raises still more.”

—Elizabeth Lewis Pardoe, William and Mary Quarterly

“Although dozens, if not hundreds, of book and articles have previously told Ephrata’s story and attempted to plumb its mystical theology, Jeff Bach’s is the first book to do the job comprehensively, empathetically, and accurately. . . . No one, however, has set out the community’s history or illuminated its ideological basis and coherence nearly as well as Bach has. This book will be the standard work on the subject for decades to come, and it constitutes an important contribution to scholarship in American religious history and the history of intentional communities.”

—Timothy Miller, Journal of American History

—Timothy Miller, Journal of American History

“The virtues of Bach’s book are considerable; however, its chief value is in providing a solid intellectual history of the Ephratan experiment. Bach’s clear understanding of the tenets of mysticism and of Boehmist thought allows him to explain elements of Ephratan life and thought which would otherwise be unexplainable.”

—James Gallant, Utopian Studies

“For the serious student of colonial Pennsylvania, the Brethren movement, communal societies, or Pietism in early America, Bach’s work is essential reading. The excellent bibliographical essay alone (pp. 197-217) makes it indispensable for academic libraries.”

—David B. Eller, Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography

“Bach’s book is a hard read, but not because he does not handle his subject deftly and with competence. Rather, as Beissel’s successor Peter Miller observed about the mystical language of Ephrata, ‘Those who speak it are hard to understand.’ Thanks to Bach, their voices (likened as they are to the cooing of turtledoves) become much more intelligible.”

—Edsel Burdge, Jr., Mennonite Quarterly Review

From the Inside Flap
Co-published with the Pennsylvania German Society

The Ephrata Cloister was a community of radical Pietists founded by Georg Conrad Beissel (1691–1768), a charismatic mystic who had been a journeyman baker in Europe. In 1720 he and a few companions sought a new life in William Penn’s land of religious freedom, eventually settling on the banks of the Cocalico Creek in what is now Lancaster County. They called their community "Ephrata," after the Hebrew name for the area around Bethlehem. Voices of the Turtledoves is a fascinating look at the sacred world that flourished at Ephrata.

At its height in the 1760s, the community at Ephrata probably numbered more than two hundred members. Celibate brothers and sisters were divided into two separate but cooperative orders, jointly called the Solitary, that followed a rule of ascetic devotion. A third order, the Householders, consisted of families that worshipped with the brothers and sisters and contributed to the communal economy. Jeff Bach is the first to draw extensively on Ephrata’s manuscript resources and on recent archaeological investigations (conducted annually since 1994) to present an overarching look at the community. He concludes that the key to understanding all the various aspects of life at Ephrata—its architecture, manuscript art, and social organization—is the religious thought of Beissel and his co-leaders.

In Ephrata’s devotional literature, the turtledove appears as a metaphor for a faithful spouse, representing the desire of Ephrata members to be joined faithfully to Christ. Voices of the Turtledoves allows various Ephrata members to speak through their writings and provides an important key to understanding their symbolic religious community.

Today, Ephrata is one of Pennsylvania’s premier tourist destinations, located near the heart of Amish country. Visitors are drawn to its magnificent buildings and idyllic setting and imagine a lost oasis of peace and contemplation. Voices of the Turtledoves will appeal to anyone who has visited or is planning a visit to Ephrata. Based on impeccable research, it will also interest students of history, religion, and the communal societies of colonial America.

Doesn't get much better than this!
By C. Renstrom
Not only does the author know his material, but he has a wonderful prose style as well. Highly recommend this to anyone interested in this community. Actually, I'd recommend it even if you weren't all that interested. The subject of Ephrata can either be terribly dry (to be expected of academia) or esoteric (Ephrata has a kind of "Burning Man" appeal among certain circles). The author brings the community to life and gives us a unique and penetrating glance into one of American History's best kept secrets.

Early American Protestant Theosophic Monasticism
By Cameron B. Clark
According to Bach in his introduction: "This book investigates the eighteenth-century Sabbatarian monastic community at Ephrata through their religious language and its European sources as the primary, but not sole, avenue of interpretation. This book proposes that Conrad Beissel and others at Ephrata used familiar elements from German Radical Pietism to create a language and ritual practices to convey a mystical awareness of God." The book's title is taken from the idea that "many people at Ephrata sought to be united with Christ in mystical union, like the turtledoves frequently found in pairs in Ephrata's art" and "the writing gave voice to Ephrata's language for the quest of each soul to be joined to Christ, like a pair of turtledoves."

I visited the Ephrata Cloister earlier this month (10/6/2009). Bach's fascinating book made the visit more meaningful and provided information not available through the site's museum and tour. My interest in the site and its history coincides with my study of the esoteric/mystical tradition of Christian theosophy, especially its development through the German mystic Jacob Boehme and his followers. It was through Arthur Versluis' books that I was introduced to the tradition as an "esoteric" form of Christianity, although I was familiar with Boehme and other theosophers influenced by him such as William Law because of my extensive study of Christian mysticism. Versluis discusses Conrad Beissel and references Bach's earlier 1997 Ph.D. Dissertation that became this book in his own book, Wisdom's Children: A Christian Esoteric Tradition, calling it "an excellent contemporary resource". Bach's book gives significantly more details and shows how Beissel was influenced by Boehme's thought primarily through Johann Georg Gichtel's interpretation of it. Beissel also held beliefs such as universal restorationism which were in common with theosopher Jane Leade and her Philadelphian Society (located in England). The ideological context of German Radical Pietism in which Beissel and his Cloister falls is also well discussed.

Bach covers not only Beissel's thought, but also the religious thought of other writers at Ephrata such as Johannes Hildebrand and Ezechiel Sangmeister, the latter being adversarial in some ways to Beissel. Bach carefully sticks with the historical facts, not being automatically swayed by negative opinions such as those by Sangmeister while clearly stating and assessing them. He is also concerned to warn readers that most of the secondary literature related to Beissel and his Cloister "depends too uncritically on Julius F. Sache's two-volume history, The German Sectarians of Pennsylvania: A Critical and Legendary History of the Ephrata Cloister and the Dunkers". He points out areas of unreliability throughout his book, although he admits that Sache's text is "valuable for its preservation of much source material" apart from Sache's altering some of it to suit his own purposes (see his cautionary comments in the Bibliographical Essay near the end of his book).

The book covers ritualistic practices involving water baptism, the love feast, anointing, the holy kiss, and the laying on of hands. It also covers devotional and ascetic practices related to the monastic life at Ephrata such as "tonsure", fasting, monastic dress, and prayer. Chapter 4 covers the topic of gender at Ephrata, showing the role of the Virgin Sophia, important to Christian theosophy, as the feminine aspect of God closely associated with Christ. Attitudes toward women, men, celibacy, sex, and marriage are explored (there were celibate orders for men and women as well as a congregation of married families known as "the householders"). Ephrata's mystical language is expounded on, including its relation to space and time, and the manuscript art of calligraphy and designs is explored in prose and pictures, touching on areas of symbolic significance.

The last chapter covers the fascinating, albeit controversial, topic of "heavenly magic". The introduction to Bach's book began with a quote from Beissel who wrote to a friend, "I wish in all my expressions to be understood magically and mystically." Ephrata's mysticism was covered in earlier chapters, leaning towards scholar of mysticism Bernard McGinn's definition of it. The last chapter approaches magic through definitions from authors such as Keith Thomas and Stanley Tambiah, and notes that "Ephrata emerged at a time when both Protestant clergy and empirical scientists dismissed magic". Bach shows that Beissel, following Gichtel, "distinguished between the evil magic of sorcery (Zauberey) and the good magic, or faith magic, which he often called simply 'magic' (Magia). For Beissel, magic was not a manipulation for personal benefit" (pages 175 - 176). Some of the discussion may leave one wondering how mysticism and miracles relate to the so-called magic, especially as it relates to God's working. Versluis in his book Wisdom's Children didn't hesitate to liken theosophical magic to the miracles in the New Testament (see Ch. 21 - Theosophy, Herbal Medicine, Magic, and Astrology, pages 272 - 273).

Although Bach explores the areas of astrology and alchemy which were mined in Ephrata for spiritual metaphors, I highly recommend Versluis' book for a more thorough introduction to this area of Christian theosophy, including its relationship to Johannes Kelpius who preceded Beissel's community in Pennsylvania. Bach also lightly touches on the belief in and experience of ghosts at Ephrata, but Versluis gives additional information about theosophic encounters with spirits in general (including angels and demons - see, for example, his discussion of John Pordage). Lastly, Bach discusses the question of Rosicrucianism at Ephrata. According to Versluis: "Historian Jeffrey Bach calls into question, I think rightfully, Beissel's 'Rosicrucianism' in Sachse's account, but it is also true that later Rosicrucian treatises are deeply indebted to Bohmean Theosophy." Those looking for discussion about possible connections to later Pennsylvania Dutch folk magic practices ("powwowing") will be disappointed. For these connections, see Versluis' Wisdom's Children, chapter 21.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Bach's exposition, and his chapter notes as well as lengthy Epilogue, bibliographical essay, index, and 29 illustrations were appreciated.

Dynamic Splendor: The Wall Mosaics in the Cathedral of Eufrasius at Porec (2 Vols.), by Ann Terry, Henry Maguire

Dynamic Splendor introduces a cycle of sixth-century mosaics little known to scholars, though they are comparable in quality and interest to famed mosaics in Italy and elsewhere. Ann Terry and Henry Maguire provide the first comprehensive account of the history and meaning of the mosaics along with the first high-quality photographic documentation of the ensemble.

It has only recently been possible to study the mosaics at Poreč closely, due to favorable conditions in Croatian Istria, where the mosaics reside, and to the discovery of the original restoration documents in Vienna and Trieste. Terry and Maguire have tracked the condition and restoration of these works, distinguishing between the original mosaics and later contributions. Beyond creating an important archival source, the authors consider the making of the mosaics, their thematic structure, their relationship to the cathedral complex, and their connection to the patron, Bishop Eufrasius, while drawing parallels with other renowned works.

Review

“Long overshadowed by their more extensive neighbors at Ravenna and Venice, the glittering mosaics of Porec have rarely been subjected to detailed scrutiny. Repeatedly restored in the late nineteenth century, they have been regarded with suspicion by scholars and quickly passed over by tourists. Terry and Maguire compensate for this neglect with meticulous examination from the scaffold and judicious study of the relative merits of pre-restoration drawings, photos, and written records . . . with a battery of color photographs unparalleled in any other work on early Byzantine mosaic.”

—Anthony Cutler, The Pennsylvania State University

“At a time when many academic publishers speculate about the demise of the art-history monograph, Dynamic Splendor is a welcome retort about what would be lost without the commitment of university presses to rigorous and elegant scholarship.”

—Eric Banks, BookForum

“The number and quality of the images as well as its high standard of scholarship make this handsomely produced boxed set, priced at only $95, surely the best buy in the book market now. The press deserves congratulations.”

—A.J. Wharton, Choice

“This magnificent two-volume work presents the sixth-century mosaics that survive in the three apses of the church in all their glory, but also in all their controversy. With more than two hundred colour photographs, the book provides invaluable visual documentation and it is hard to envisage it being surpassed in the future. This is an indispensable research tool for anyone interested in Early Christian art.”

—Antony Eastmond, Burlington Magazine

“Beautifully and extensively illustrated with color photographs of the mosaics in the basilica together with a generous number of comparanda, this book recuperates for scholars a major, long ignored monumental program.”

—Elizabeth S. Bolman, Journal of Early Christian Studies

“With the publication of Dynamic Splendor, Ann Terry and Henry Maguire have erected a monument of their own in honor of the Basilica Eufrasiana. . . . It will serve many uses: as an object of aesthetic appreciation, a record of valuable research, and a thoughtful model for future monographs.”

—Benjamin Anderson, Bryn Mawr Classical Review (BMCR)

“Dynamic Splendor, by Ann Terry and Henry Maguire, might be described as a traditional monograph on the internal decoration of a particular building, one that adopts an implicit model of Panofskian analysis by opening with questions of formal perception moving through a discussion of the iconography of the art works, and concluding with a discussion of iconology. And there is nothing wrong with that, especially when it it is as well executed as this. Indeed, it is the level of formal analysis that makes the book so distinctive and so interesting.”

—Liz James, Art History

Teaches Structure of Making Persuassive Reports & Presentations
By Transmo
My need is mostly to write small how-to books and sales letters, and I have found out that this book shows how to structure such writings. It also points out to a great extent the importance of knowing your target audience and having an objective for what you write because it will have lots of influence on what your report/presentation/writing will be able to achieve with its readers.

Normally, most books that teach same topic will write and structure it in a completely different way making it a kind of big deal, but this is one great. This feels like I'm looking at something I've always seen from a completely different point of view bringing a lot of clarity.

It's a great book and I recommend it.

Killing and Saving: Abortion, Hunger, and War, by John P. J R. Reeder

Contrary to the views of Alasdair MacIntyre and others who assert that modern Western morality is in disarray, torn by incommensurable moral views, John Reeder believes that there is much agreement about taking and saving lives. Many people might, in fact, agree on the various circumstances in which the death of a person constitutes a violation of the right to life, or that people have a right to our help, especially a right to life-saving aid. In Killing and Saving, Reeder analyzes five sorts of situations in which we are morally permitted or even obligated to take human life: e.g., when we repel an attacker who voluntarily 'forfeits' the right to life; when we are confronted with 'involuntary pursuit' or 'material aggression;' when someone 'yields' the right to life; when all will die if nothing is done, but some can be saved if others are killed; and when there is a 'double effect' in which we take life as a foreseen but unintended consequence of attempt to achieve a greater good. Reeder argues that these (and closely related) categories account for many of our convictions ranging from abortion to infanticide, to starvation, to war. He also examines the concept of absolute or exceptionless right to life. Reeder draws on a number of moral views, from theological ethics to Enlightenment notions of natural rights or respect for rational creatures. He does not attempt to argue for a foundation for the right not to be killed and the right to be saved. Rather, he focuses on the content of the convictions themselves and argues that where disagreements remain, such as the case of abortion, they can be accounted for by the way the rights in question are explained and justified.

Review
Through the careful, painstaking analysis of arguments, the author builds his own framework and draws his conclusion about an absolute right in a way that never fails to illuminate and instruct and, for the most part, to convince. This book will make an important contribution to the scholarly literature. It can also be consulted by those who are less academically inclined and used in college courses. --James Childress

This impressive work is fair, balanced, critical and insightful. --Choice

A profoundly immoral approach to the study of morality
By Peter Capofreddi
A culture that teaches children to admire the rich and beautiful and ignore the poor and oppressed, to emulate successful athletes and con men and ignore those trodden under their feet, to buy and sell rather than study and pray, to seek commercial success rather than intellectual and moral excellence--such a culture is a pathological culture that must be despised, scorned and rejected by any human being with a conscience. As James says, a friend of this world is an enemy of God (4:4).

But an ambitious academic, having imbibed the all-American culture of ambition and greed along with his meat and potatoes, desires praise and applause from this world. He wants to be promoted. He wants tenure. So rather than standing in opposition to the world and bearing witness along with the prophets to the depravity of this world, he instead applauds the world for having reached consensus on so many points. Never mind that the world is full of self-congratulatory conmen and sinners. The sinners are unanimous that greed is not a sin, so let's turn our attention away from greed and focus on the few minor points where the sinners still seem to disagree, document carefully the way the sinners think and talk about these questions, find some core of agreement among them, and see if we can get tenure and promotion for our efforts.

_Killing and Saving_ adopts a profoundly immoral approach to the study of morality. Rather than confronting the moral questions the author actually faces: the corrupting influence of academic ambition, the absurdity of studying moral philosophy at an institution that also performs research building more efficient tanks and missiles for the empire of greed, instead our author chooses to discuss highly improbable hypothetical moral situations involving trolleycars.

Professor Reeder claims (1) there is some agreement about the fundamental moral issues involved in taking and saving human lives, and (2) this refutes the claims of modernity critics like Alasdair MacIntyre who claim modern moral thought is in disarray. But even if one were persuaded of (1) (I am not), (2) does not follow. A society of self-absorbed greedy imperialists might all agree expensive operations to extend their lives a few years, in the process consuming resources that might have saved hundreds of starving children in Africa, are a wise and worthwhile use of resources. And they would still be profoundly wrong.

Our ambitious academic wisely chooses as his area of moral inquiry not a subject in which Americans are unanimously agreed in their depravity, but rather a subject in which different Americans are depraved in different ways. By focusing on the points of disagreement the world has with itself, rather than the profound and fundamental immorality of the world, an ambitious academic finds a comfortable niche where he can use his moral sophistry to make himself a friend of the world, congratulate the world for being so consistent in its philosophy of selfishness and greed, and win tenure and applause.

On page 66 we find a typical formulation of a repetitive formula. What is the proper response of the group when confronted with moral situation X? But a moral person has already severed himself from the group. Groups are led by conmen who seduce vulnerable minds into putting them into a positions of power. Virtuous men and women are always alone. We die on crosses. But in _Killing and Saving_, the Constantinian premise that rulers and groups can be moral is assumed without our author showing even the faintest glimmer of awareness that he makes this assumption, and certainly without showing any intent whatsoever to examine or question it.

Indeed, the assumption that a community of scholars, working together, can divide and conquer the study of morality the same way molecular biologists divide and conquer the study of the genome, is so fundamentally encoded into the intellectual viewpoint of the book, the assumption is not even hinted at. But in a fallen world in which institutions are ruled by greed and ambition, how can we so sanguinely assume that a task can be pristinely divided without the worldly institutions that do the dividing corrupting the study at the outset with their unconscionable assumptions? Is it really plausible to suppose the study of morality is compatible with any sort of worldly ambition, academic or otherwise?
