About the Author
Germain Grisez is Bishop Harry J. Flynn Professor of Christian Ethics at Mount Saint Mary’s College and Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
Russell Shaw is the former Director of Public Information and Publications for the Knights of Columbus. Shaw and Grisez are also co-authors of Fulfillment in Christ, also published by the University of Notre Dame Press.

It's amazing that no one has reviewed this book on Amazon...

...because it's been in print for 40 years and is really good.
"Beyond the New Morality" covers a lot of ground in barely 200 pages. It offers an analysis of the human person, a theory of human action, and an account of basic human goods. It then weaves these strands into a moral theory based on the idea that persons shape themselves through the choices they make, and become more fully-realized persons to the extent they participate in basic human goods. For the most part, the argument is built upon features of common experience, not grandiose metaphysical assumptions. The book is wise, well-written, and thought-provoking, even when it isn't fully convincing (as when it rejects all forms of consequentialism).
"Beyond the New Morality" has had a huge impact on natural law jurisprudence (via the works of John Finnis) and on Catholic moral theology (via subsequent works by one of the authors, Germain Grisez). Read it. You'll be participating in a basic human good.
