The Roman Catholic Church at the Pinacle of its Authority

This is a great book on the life of Pope Innocent III (1160 C.E. [Common Era] until 1216 C.E. Innocent III was elected pope of the Roman Catholic Church in 1198 C.E. and served pope until his death in 1216 C.E. When a person studies the papacy of Innocent III, the person is viewing the Roman Catholic Church at the very pinnacle of its power and prestige throughout the world. Innocent III sought to re-assert papal power by greater involvement in the elections for Holy Roman Empire. Innocent also sought to reform the Roman Catholic Church by convening the Fourth Lateran Council. The result of the Fourth Lateran Council was to make the church look a lot like it does in the present day, by centralizing much of the power in the church in the papal curia in Rome.
Innocent III was also called for another crusade (now called the Fourth Crusade). This crusade (1202 C.E. through 1204 C.E.) was intended to re-capture Jerusalem which had been captured by the Muslims in 1187 C.E. The crusaders would attack Egypt and fight their way up to the Land where they would retake Jerusalem. However, some unforeseen events caused the crusaders to land in Constantinople and
to sack that city, which was the capital of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Needless to say, this was not part of Innocent III's plan for the crusade and resulted in a further widening of the capital relations between the Christian Church of the East from the Christian Church of the West.

Excellent, readable, thorough introduction to a very interesting pope, Innocent III. Moore covers the key events. Outstanding bibliography. And special kudos to the publisher for using footnotes instead of forcing the reader to suffer with end notes.
